Crater Lake Oregon A Deep Blue Wonder of Nature Right in the heart of southern Oregon's Cascade Mountains, Crater Lake is a breathtaking natural marvel, known for its intense sapphire-blue waters, remarkable clarity, and dramatic geological history. Formed over 7,000 years ago by the collapse of the ancient Mount Mazama volcano, this deep caldera lake is the deepest lake in the United States, plunging to a depth of 1,943 feet (592 meters). Surrounded by towering cliffs that rise up to 2,000 feet above the lake's surface, Crater Lake lies within Crater Lake National Park, a protected wilderness rich with forests, volcanic rock formations, and diverse wildlife. The lake itself has no rivers flowing in or out; instead, it is fed entirely by rain and snow, which contributes to its stunning purity and color. Wizard Island, a cinder cone that emerged after the initial eruption, rises from the western side of the lake, resembling a miniature volcanic island.
