I had two rolls of slightly expired , with more available (at that time) at a good price from the local Boots. So I decided to load them into my MX and LX cameras with similar lenses (SMC M 50/1.7 and SMC [EDIT] M 50/1.4), and take the same scenes with the same exposure, then dev one in HC-110 dilution E and the other via a lab in C41 chems. It didn't go well! For some reason the cameras disagreed about exposure. At first I kept them the same, later let each meter itself...

EDIT: HC-110 dilution E. Also, the LX was actually using a SMC M 50/1.4 lens for these comparison.


First pair: Bench and Castle. Both XP2, MX with M 50/1.7 HC-110 dilution E; LX M 50/1.4, C41 via Filmdev.Then Fallen log, same combination.

The bench photo illustrates the massive and ugly grain that a lot of frames of XP2 in HC-110 had.


So my feeling, after this experiment with XP2 in HC-110 is, that I probably won't do this again. Partly because the cut price XP2 rolls in our local Boots have increased from £7 to £10, but mostly because I like traditional black and white films MUCH better!

The dev time for XP2 in HC-110 E is 10 minutes according to MDC. Adjusted for the Rondinax that should be 8:30... it's possible I might have misread my note as 6:30! Oh well, not trying again, any way.

Something completely different, inspired by @moragperkins : a couple of images with . The film is reversed Kodacolor 200; for the 1st image the camera was my (not really suitable, as it turned out) and lens a Vivitar 28/2.8; the 2nd was my , lens SMC K 55/1.8. Not sure I'll be doing much more freelensing, though!

Castle in the sun. This is a roll of expired 200 from my pocket camera. A roll does often take quit a long time, given I'm mostly interested in black and white in cameras where I have more control, so most images on this roll are from last autumn!

Autumn beech tree colour. This area is right beside the main road into Coventry, a 2-mile long avenue with woodland strip each side. A taxi-driver once told me an American passenger had labelled this road a "million dollar ride to a ten cent city"! Ouch.

Three cars in the Alvis yard. The Coventry factory stopped production in 1967, but since 1968 the Red Triangle company has been maintaining and now re-manufacturing Alvis cars in Kenilworth!

@moragperkins I really struggled with them, couldn't seem to get even the tiniest part in focus! Worked better on the LX than the ME; the latter only has aperture priority and was completely boonswaggled by all the light!

@carusb yeah it definitely works best in those sorts of situations where focus isn't that important / you're going full dreamy anyway.

I cheated and used a patch of long grasses so usually *something* will come up sharpish somewhere 😆

@roguemusiclab Thanks Rogue. I'm probably going to be doing less as I run out of expired colour film, and fresh stock is way too expensive to be treated that way!

@carusb, understandable. Luckily, I was just given a stash of expired colour 135 rolls. Fun will be had!

@carusb Brave man using ICM with film. Turned out nice. I’ll bet you had more than the usual amount of anticipation when you got to see the negs.

@tomnorthfilm Thanks Tom. Yes, it's a worry, and sometimes I get a whole roll with nothing I'm at all happy with! Not sure I'll be doing much more, with the price of colour film, though there is a case here for trying to buy some cheap expired stuff from the evil bay!

@carusb I learned of these through UK YouTube photographers, what a great concept for land use rights. I understand you can also camp for a night in some areas while transiting?

@shom Footpaths in England and Wales (not Scotland) are ancient rights of way; it's quite hard to extinguish them, thankfully. Wild camping rights are currently very controversial; the only place you could do it legally without consent in England/Wales was Dartmoor but some bastard hedge fund guy bought up the land and managed to extinguish the wild camping right, subject to appeal October this year! But if you Leave No Trace you'll usually be safe...

@carusb that's disappointing to hear. Not that I was ever going to attempt it as a brown foreigner, but still a bummer to hear.
I like jurisdictions where there are public right of ways to nature. Hawaii has a lot of colonial land use problems but all beaches are public and have access requirements. I got to do a shore scuba dive off of the property of a 5 star resort without staying there, that's nice!

@shom Scotland has Right To Roam law, which makes up for the lack of public footpaths (there are also plenty of long distance trails). I think the majority of UK foreshore (between high and low water) is owned by the Crown Estate, but that doesn't necessarily allow access, except again in Scotland where there is, apparently, a common law right. Note, IANAL.

Olympus made perfect tiny cameras for taking with you for occasional use. They make great photos too. I often use my XA in a similar manner.

@tapasinthesun Thanks Rom. I very much agree with you. It's occasionally frustrating due to lack of control, but the lens is darn good and generally it just... works! It sits in my right hand coat pocket year-round, and I mostly forget about it, but sometimes, I just need to take a _colour_ photo of what I see, rather than black and white. And sometimes, it's all I have, other than my ancient phone (photos from that make me annoyed I didn't use a "proper" camera!).
