The lens I have is a Nikon AF VR Zoom-Nikkor 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED.

IMO this copy is an exceptional lens. Light & portable for its 5x zoom range, lovely colour rendition and 'sharp' - "whatever sharp really means".

I believe it produces super RAW/NEF files to work with too.

My apologies, though I have no experience of the 200-500mm you're thinking of getting.
In any case good luck with your search for one and I hope you will be very pleased with it.
