I’ve been playing with my new toy for a few days now and I have to say that I truly love it. Sony lens 70-200mm f2.8 is a beast: fast and precise, bright and defined, lighter than expected on my back.
The long straight paths in the forest are perfect for a good tele.
Browsing through Sony lenses list I stumbled upon a Teleconverter 2x, have any of you ever used it? What do you think about the usage of teleconverters.
@micmol I have a 1.4x that I used to use fairly frequently for telephoto stuff, there isn't much sharpness loss but wether it's any better than just cropping in (if you have the resolution) is debatable. In my research it did seem like the 2x came with a little bit of softness.
@NimbleDave Hello Dave, I understand what you mean. Cropping (with enough resolution) vs. lens+teleconverter could go down to a matter of esthetic and taste. Softness is probably my biggest concern, do you think new gen editors can fix that?
@micmol I use Canon gear, so can't comment specifically on the Sony teleconverters, but I have a 1.4x and 2x. The 2x was my go to when the longest lens I had was a 70-200 - it did make things a bit softer and slow down the AF, but gave me a lot more reach when I 'only' had 22mp to work with. Now I have a 100-400 and 45mp but still use the 1.4x most of the time for birds/wildlife. This is 400mm with the 1.4x (560mm) with a slight crop.
@sy Hello Sy, and also hello to beautiful NZ! Thank you for your extensive toot. I'm in your original situation, but with a 45mp, so I think I'll venture soon in the land of teleconverters.
Your seal photo seems pretty defined to me, maybe a bit soft below the ear but otherwise sharp enough. Btw, nice shot.
I used to be a Canon guy myself, from my father's Canonet QL to my first Canon AE-1 and so on till when Canon was late on the mirrorless train ... too bad.
@micmol beautiful shot!
@exkclamation thank you!
@micmol I have the Sony 200-600mm and I use the 1.4x teleconverter. I decided against the 2x based on that losing 2 stops of light, and the 1.4x loses only 1 stop. Reading up on others experiences the autofocus can become much slower with the 2x, I can attest this is not too bad on the 1.4x that I use
@ObsidianUrbex Thank you for your experienced toot. I understand the 200-600 is a f/5.6-6.3 so the 1.4x is a sensitive choice. The 70-200 is brighter and even a 2 stops loss will still keep it in a pretty good usage range. I'm not really concerned on the autofocus slowing down since I'm not after animals but landscapes.
Your photography, btw, is an eye opener to me! Besides the great composition, I didn't know so many different and intriguing places were in an abandoned state. Good exploration!
@micmol definitely that autofocus slow down won't be an issue for you either if your subject isnt moving. I use my telephoto for seals and pups, and those little guys sure do wiggle about
Thanks so much for taking a look at my work, abandoned places are my passion (along with seals haha). There are so many amazing things to see, I struggle to go passed any locked doors and not try and take a look inside now
@ObsidianUrbex Geez, your seals and puppies photos are cute and very interesting at the same time, so many different situations … and I can almost smell the pungent odor also love the mosaic disposition.
Kudos and good luck for both your passions
@micmol they are equal parts adorable, hilariously filled with character...and stinky
@micmol This is very pretty. Hope to see many more creative projects coming from your new toy. Enjoy!
@plants thank you I appreciate your positivity!
