Today I measured up the trunk of the fallen Poplar tree and estimated its volume as a truncated cone:

V = 1/3 · π · (r² + r·R + R² )

Where :
R is the radius of the base, 0.339 m
r the radius of the top, 0.177 m, and
h is the 'height' or length of the trunk, 16 m.

I have previously estimated the density at 767 kg/ m³ and water content at 444 kg/ m³ .

Volume estimated at 3.46 m³
Wet weight 2.65 tonnes
Dry weight 1.11 tonnes

This is my old occupation as a cost accountant coming out! I just love calculating things out exactly.

On a more practical side, this one tree should supply enough firewood to keep our two households warm for the next winter.

My 'Rosetta Stone' for estimating the wet and dry densities of this timber is a block of wood I kept aside and measured over time as it dried out. Originally weighing 1554 g it has stabilised at 654 g having lost 900 g or water and going from 767 to 323 kg/ m³
