The Lava Tunnel
Iceland

Spur of the moment, we decided to explore the lava tunnel open to visitors in Iceland.

It was cold and damp inside, and we saw magnificent stalactites and stalagmites.

The story was sheep discovered it. They were grazing and the hole you see above emerged.

We explored another lava tube on Maui recently, and while it was also cool, this Icelandic one was more exciting.

A lava tube in Iceland. There are ferns growing on the sides of the rocky underground cave. People from our tour group are ahead to show the massive scale of the tube where lava once flowed through. The hole that formed one day when sheep were grazing above is pictured. That is how people discovered the tube as it’s primarily underground.

@redhairedphotographer This one is in far north Queensland Australia about 3 hours drive west of Cairns - Undara lava tubes. We had the same idea of using people for scale.

A few years ago we took a trip to Lassen and spent a day in the lava tunnels at Lava Beds National Park in Northern California. Really great to explore all the lava tubes and caves. Now I’ll have to add Iceland (and Maui) to the bucket list! 🤩
