I think and hope the days of Pharma hiring PhDs for the project signoff liability reasons is long gone. For a lot of things including in biotech, skilled specialized MS students would be great. Natasha Warner<p>I just finished _The AI Con_ by <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://dair-community.social/@emilymbender" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>emilymbender</span></a></span> (Emily Bender) and Alex Hanna. It explains what's going on with over-hyped claims of what AI can do (or surely will be able to do by next year, right?) in a lot more depth than I had been familiar with. It covers the harms to real live current people, including some harms I hadn't known about before. It's surprisingly readable for a tech topic. In combination with current politics, the situations described in the book did get a little overwhelming, but the final chapter does give suggestions of immediate things we can do about it. I was pleased to find out my local independent bookstore stocks it, and I was able to go right over and buy a copy. I definitely recommend this book. <a href="https://bookshop.org/p/books/the-ai-con-how-to-fight-big-tech-s-hype-and-create-the-future-we-want-alex-hanna/22044744" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">bookshop.org/p/books/the-ai-co</span><span class="invisible">n-how-to-fight-big-tech-s-hype-and-create-the-future-we-want-alex-hanna/22044744</span></a> <a href="https://tenforward.social/tags/AI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AI</span></a> <a href="https://tenforward.social/tags/AcademicChatter" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AcademicChatter</span></a></p>
