The Five Continents.

So, this is not some sort of AI generated photo, but it is a real existing building.

If you are ever in the city of Antwerp, be sure not to miss ‘The Five Continents’ an Art-Deco building colloquially known as ‘the boat house’ or ‘the little boat’ for it’s facade which has a balcony in the form of a ship.

Built in 1901 to the plans of architect Frans Smet-Verhas and commissioned by the boat builder Petrus Roeis, it was sold 2 years ago for funny money (a 2 and 6 zero’s) to a lawyer firm.

During the 19th century building of the so called #Brialmont #fortifications around the city of #Antwerp began. Technology evolved rapidly, however, and by the time they were ready they were already outdated. Built entirely of bricks they only had a limited adequacy during the Great War. Still, because of them, it took longer than anticipated for the Germans to occupy Antwerp.

Fort 8 is the best preserved and is accessible.

A circle with a solid brick wall to the left which arches to arching niches to the right (4 of them can be seen.) Every niche has a small window. Everything built out of red bricks, even the floor. The bricks on the floor are worn (but generally in good condition,) everything else is well preserved.
