Sigh. Tough post. #Fedihired

So I found that #DOGE is currently in the org I work at. Ive confirmed from 2 colleagues. They're going after contractors first, since we have mostly no protections.

I've been looking since Nov 6, but now things are getting down to the wire.

I'm a senior cloud systems engineer. Current is administering/developing #ArcGIS #GIS . Previously was systems engineer with greenfielding and putting together multiple ATO's. Before that, was systems engineer at a NOC.

I highly prefer #remote but can travel 60 miles around #bloomingtonIN

@GottaLaff Here is more info about the EPA’s Environmental Justice Screening and Mapping team.

That EPA team has a large amount of #geospatial data hosted on an #ArcGIS server at
ejscreen.epa.gov/arcgis/rest/s

That team also has a website at epa.gov/ejscreen

Yesterday I noticed that both of those servers are now offline. I noticed that those federal servers are no longer available to the public because I volunteer to curate a list of USA government ArcGIS server addresses from federal to local and post weekly updates via a PDF file at:
mappingsupport.com/p/surf_gis/
#GIS

Geez if the US economy collapses, how much damage would it do to #ArcGIS, I wonder? I know they have European servers, but not many... Microsoft for that matter? Though I imagine they are a bit more globally spread. #gis

In the past, I was the guy who said "if you're already using #ArcGIS Enterprise, just use Hosted Feature Layers for everything".

I now admit, this was a bad idea, and I amend the statement thusly:

"…unless it's for something that is in any way important. If your data matters, keep it the hell out, because the lack of administrative access to the database is going to burn you when things go wrong. And they will."

In related news, it looks like I get to work through another weekend.

BAH. Another day of opaque vendor issues.

Add a new field to my #ArcGIS feature service: ERROR. There's a "field name collision".

No, I checked, there's definitely no field with this name. But okay, fine. Let's use a different name, not my preferred one.

Success! Except!

Now the table no longer loads at all! It can be queried and edited through its REST endpoint like usual, but generic queries to, y'know, view the whole table, just return an "UNKNOWN ERROR".

I'm so sick of this. :arcgis:

Hi all, I work in #NatureRecovery and #WildlifeConservation and have set this up as a semi-professional account to chat about #GIS (using #ArcGIS and #QGIS), #drones / #UAV for surveys, and generally tech in nature monitoring. I'm based in south west Wales and I also like looking at actual live animals instead of through a screen, and being outside generally. (I say, as I spend a huge amount of my time indoors on the computer). #Introduction #Introductions

I went and did a Solstice survey, but now I can't get the data off the data collection device. Worried I may have accidentally deleted it and will need to do another survey. I worried about this last time I did a survey and it wasn't the case, but I can't help freaking out a bit. Especially since the guy who helped me last time is out in the field right now. /grump

@madelineostrander One of my volunteer projects is curating a list of #ArcGIS server addresses at all levels of government from federal to local. A vast amount of #climate data is hosted on ArcGIS servers and can be downloaded by anyone.
#Climatechange #climatescience

An updated list is usually posted each Wednesday. The federal ArcGIS servers are listed by department.

One way to download data is by entering an ArcGIS ‘query’ command into a browser. You do not need to be a geospatial expert to do this. I wrote step-by-step instructions. Ignore the references to ATAK which is an Android app.
mappingsupport.com/p2/atak/pdf

I wonder if anyone still uses #MapInfo to do #GIS. I remember having to learn it back in 2012, but have not used it ever since. MapInfo has a website and a changed owner, so they're around, but not in (my) view.

Most Finnish municipalities had chosen it as their GIS system back in the day, but I think that is changing rapidly. At least #Vantaa is fully in the #ArcGIS boat, #QGIS is common in #Helsinki and #Espoo but I am not sure of the rest.

Will important data disappear from federal #ArcGIS servers after the new administration takes over? For example, think about climate change data.

Many data layers on ArcGIS servers can be downloaded with a simple command. You do *not* need to be a #Geospatial expert.

Here is a PDF I produced with step-by-step instructions. The PDF refers to the Android app ATAK - just ignore that part.
mappingsupport.com/p2/atak/pdf

All you need to do is (1) make an ArcGIS 'query' command as explained in the PDF, (2) enter that command into a browser and (3) save the KMZ file on your device.
