I love this campaign - more investment into our music industry powers an entire ecosystem of people across a range of skillsets. I don't know the kind of person I'd be without having access to live music.
I've reached out to my local MP encouraging them to support the campaign.
“#Keating was still the prime minister, #Kennett was premier of #Victoria. The highest selling song of the year in this country was Gangsta's Paradise by Coolio. Blood Sugar Sex Magik by the Red Hot Chili Peppers had been out for four years but still held sway over the entire universe.
There was a band in #Sydney called Def FX who were winning awards and telling us in song titles and lyrics – with a metal/hiphop backbeat – about "ritual", "magik" and "psychoactives".
This was what was in the wind. It was commercial music, the #TripleJ staple of the day, and #Cranky came and went so very quickly within all of this with 2 Bugs and a song called Australia Don't Become America, otherwise known as "Straya Don Come Merica". It was influenced by the above – the sound and the fury – and in particular by Rage Against The Machine, Disposible Heroes of Hiphroprisy, Public Enemy, Pop Will Eat Itself and EMF”

Love & terror in 120 chord changes
Love is a terrorist thing
for people with a problem & a theory & a gun
who's holding hands with the hostages?
everyone everyone
When you're dying pretty, sweat, regret, you're deperate
It was like we never met
Who wants to be human?
Caught by the killer & the talk talk talk
All that noise fat little boys

I saw them play in the new year at Woodford Folk Festival in 2022. This track was the banger of the night.
Their sets are rich in flamenco guitar, middle eastern sounds and driving trance rhythms. Hard to categorise, infectious to listen to & too irresistible to not dance too.
They will elevate your soul

An amazing remix of the iconic "Are You Being Served" theme song that features the elevator sounds and voices from inside the elevator featured in the show.
The elevator was almost a character itself..

If your Friday night music is looking for a bit of Australian-Indian cross over, can I suggest Glass Beams. Heard a few bits and pieces recently but had a good listen to this now and it is such a chill vibe. I also want to know where they're getting their instruments from. The bass is cool, but that guitar I must have.

It's not great and it's barely a highway but here's an uncharacteristically slow number about it:
Packing my bags and I'm heading out west of town
This city woman she aint going to let me leave
This shitty job is going to be the death of me
'cos the only place I can afford to be is 6 foot under

This article paints a sad picture for Australian music but I've never really paid a lot of attention to the national charts. To me, the heart & soul of Australian music lives in its local venues where you get to live & breathe the great music that people pour their heart into.
I'm guessing (hoping!) it's #BandcampFriday local time here, so just picked this up, by Masto's own @kentparkstreet1 and it's an absolute treat.

From the album Xenophobia[Why?], a song that's been a personal anthem for more decades than I care to think about.
Been years gone by
I've just abused my mind
My body's paid the price
Come to a fork
I can go up and down
Or use my mouth too much
Oh lord, protect my words
Reality's a matter of a clarity of mind

Died Pretty – Free Dirt (1986, Australia)
As randomly chosen by survey[1] on Mastodon, our next spotlight is on number 203 on The List, submitted by joostverweij.
Feeling pretty basic (/low on spoons), so here’s some bare bones facts about this one:
The band was originally named “Final Solution” after the 1976 single by Pere Ubu, which was itself named after the Sherlock Holmes’ book The Final Problem.
Free Dirt is Died Pretty’s debut album. It has a great cover. It’s 40 minutes and 10 tracks long. It’s lovely. It’s only been reissued on vinyl once, in 2022.
The band would go on to release 7 more studio albums, the last in 2000. Their 4th, Doughboy Hollow (1991), is considered by some to be their best.
They have a (now possibly defunct) blog run by guitarist/backing vocalist Brett Myers with some cool archive videos and whatnot.
Ron S. Peno, the lead singer, left us, in 2023 (RIP).
Hope you’re hanging in there, all.

A shy Black boy, you came to the city
To learn about life and now his people lost their lives
His parents died when he was just a child
And now his life is mystified
The colour of your skin is your pride & joy
He didn't go to school, 'cause they called him Black boy
He hardly talked to the girls and boys

“What we really wanted to do was give attention to bands who might not have made a single, who might not be played by commercial radio, they weren't successful, but they were writing successful songs," says founding presenter Chris Winter. "It's hard to believe now but Mental As Anything and Midnight Oil were two such bands. Many bands weren't ever gonna get heard on commercial radio if they weren't mimicking the sounds of overseas, they weren't particularly capable of fitting into a format," — #MidnightOil, #PeterGarrett
Australian acts front and centre, everyone else in “overseas slop” slots. Whats the point of a national #broadcaster highlighting ForeignContent before our own #homegrown? In an interconnected world you can tune into foreign music. Where do you tune in for Australian acts?
