Big Mountain Legacy Film: SYNOPSIS / Re-enactments / A Dream of a Man
Director: Bahe (Naabaahii) Katenay (Keediniihii), October 2023 (75 minute featured documentary)

Background:

"In the 1970s, Dineh (Navajo) families around Big Mountain were notified that their communities would be uprooted and that they may never see their ancestral homelands ever again. Now 50 years later, less than 20 home sites remain and the once strong #resistance leaders like #PaulineWhitesinger, #HaastinNiizBegay, #JohnKatenay, and #RobertaBlackgoat (#KleeBenally's grandmother) have all passed on.

How should the future remember the legacies of such wise teachers? What gave their community the will to defy U.S.

Congressional Legislations that were nothing but anti-Indian which was forcing them to give up hundreds of years of cultural existence?

The Congress of the United States passed Public Law 93-531 in 1974 and it was signed by the President. It is an Executive Order, a declaration to exterminate, a declaration of war. The justification for this law was to “resolve” a supposed “land-dispute” among the Hopis and Dineh, and the lands were divided.

The 2023 Video Documentary:
The original impetus for resisting the federal mandate was the sacredness of the lands, ancestral ties and natural features which were dwelling places of Deities. The elder interviewees knew the future will not be the same way as they had lived and the same childhood experience. The video put aside much of the effective resistance against the most powerful, #capitalistic country in the world, instead the video presents stories about their ancestors’ teachings. A Dineh ritual existence which was basically daily living, ceremonies and nutrition. An indigenous atmosphere long before the Europeans’ arrival with its brutal conquest. The video narrowly touches on a 400-year history of cultural survival and maintaining identity. And how that history overlaps with so-called modern America.

One grandmother’s story become an intense chapter, and it is about her direct clan ancestry facing near annihilation as one little girl survives which resulted in re-establishing a Clan at Big Mountain.

"This story comes from a massacre site with two mass graves. Then stories about decades of intense state of fear and which lead into the US’s late 1800s war policy of random killing, starvation and captivity. The modern times the 1920s and 30s when these story tellers were born, a different state of fear had re-emerged, and then again at their elderhood in the late 1900s. All the stories in this documentary program are messages for the future because, as these elders have predicted, the lands maybe empty of indigenous culture which once thrived for centuries."

Deadly Coal Mining is a Photo-Op for Navajo President and the Media is Part of the Game

By #BrendaNorrell, Censored News, April 12, 2025

"The media covered up the true history of #coal mining on #BlackMesa. Now, #Navajo President #BuuNygren is pushing and celebrating #CoalMining, and was in D.C. for photo ops doing it.

"Peabody Coal didn't just dig up coal -- they dug up Dine' from their burial places, and Dine' were put in museums. Dine' graves were dug up for 16 years, and cultural items were looted by a team from Prescott College, and millions of items were taken to Southern Illinois University. The Navajo government granted #Peabody Coal its lease and knew about the robbing of graves of Dine' at the time.

"It is a dark chapter in history, and the Navajo President now glosses over this cruel and toxic history with his PR spin and photos in self-promotion in DC."

#FourCorners Area Crucial

The Hopi prophecies warned that the white men or "#Pahana" would come to their land and try and lead them into evil ways. The Hopi were told that they must hold onto their tradition and their land, though always without violence. If they succeeded, their land would become a center from which Spirit would be reawakened, resonating throughout the world.

Frank Waters, author of "The Book of the Hopi," wrote in 1963 that "when the 'heart' of the Hopi land trust is dug up, great disturbances will develop in the balance of nature, for the Hopi holy land is the microcosmic image of the entire planet; any violations of nature in the Four Corners region will be reflected and amplified all over the Earth," and that what is dug up there (#uranium) would be used for destructive purposes. #ThomasBanyacya also wrote of the Four Corners area: "Great Spirit told Hopi [that Four Corners is] the backbone of the United States. Hopi must hold land till Human Beings live in harmony."

This sacred area is being strip-mined for #coal and uranium, reducing the water table and causing radioactive pollution. According to Quail Littlefield of "People Concerned with #MotherEarth," recent discoveries show that the Four Corners area is not only rich in coal and uranium, but is also a main source of positive and negative ions in the atmosphere. It is also said to be one of the few key focal centers in the world where the energy current must be kept in balance to maintain a life-giving biosphere. According to some Hopi Elders, if this center is disrupted, then the atmosphere will become unstable and all life will perish.

The Hopi and #Navajo (#Dine) have co-existed peacefully on these lands (Four Corners) for many generations. A "range war" was fabricated to allow the Bureau of Indian Affairs [#BIA], through the #HopiTribalCouncil, to grant exclusive #mining rights to #PeabodyCoal Company, which called for the eviction of Navajo elders to an area that is barren and 60 miles downstream from uranium-poisoned waters. Forcible removal of the Elders begins in February, 2000.

Hopi Elders Thomas Banyacya and Grandfather #DanEvehema, as well as many others, have opposed this forced relocation. People from not only the United States but all over the world have sent letters to Janet Reno, and other government officials to stop this eviction, which violates the American Indian Religious Freedom Act 17 and the Religious Freedom Restoration Act 18.

#Hopi Prophecies

by Morgan Cathbadh (my pen-name)

(previously published in the April, 1999 issue of Maine Well-Being newspaper, and EarthStar Magazine)

#HopiProphecy predates the coming of white people. In fact, the coming of Pahana (whites) is part of the prophecy, the beginning of #Koyaaniqatsi, meaning "crazy life," "life in turmoil," or "life out of balance." Koyanniqatsi is a state of life that calls for another way of living. That is what we all must do to survive.

by #BrendaNorrell, #CensoredNews, March 10, 2022

"An undercover, pink-haired undercover cop in Colorado Springs, attempted to create crimes, and ensnare activists in illegal firearms purchases. Even a #MutualAid group was targeted. This current case in Colorado is a reminder of how Denver cops spied on everyone who supported #BigMountain, #Peltier and #AIM, in the 1990s. Even a grandmother with a Peltier bumper sticker and their attorneys were followed. The documents came out during discovery during a court case.

"The current Colorado Springs covert operation reveals how undercover cops target organizers, and attempt to entrap them, including those in #BlackLivesMatter, and shows that #COINTELPRO continues."

The last part of this section (The #AIM Song of Anguish) of chapter 8 of #KleeBenally's book #NoSpiritualSurrender is something that I can relate to. After my negative experience with an AIM member, I formed an alliance with #RobertaBlackgoat and #CorbinHarney -- and told their stories (as well as providing #MutualAid). And yeah, not all resistance groups are created equal!

"AIM has been extraordinarily gloried but they weren’t the only radical #Indigenous organizations operating then; communities with forces such as #JanetMcCloud fighting for fishing rights in so-called Washington, Corbin Harney resisting #NuclearColonialism in so-called Nevada, grandmothers #KatherineSmith, #PaulineWhitesinger, and Roberta Blackgoat fighting coal mining and forced relocation on #BlackMesa, and so many more have fought for decades to protect sacred lands and waters. Occasionally AIM would be there alongside those struggles and sometimes they would not be welcome. In spite of this, the AIM song still echoes and invokes the spirit of resistance in #Tulalip, #WesternShoshone, and #Diné frontlines, and far beyond."

Warriors for a New Generation: #Indigenous Youths at the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues

By #BrendaNorrell, #CensoredNews, April 17, 2024

NEW YORK -- "Indigenous youths from around the world challenged #corporations and institutions -- rising as warriors, defenders and #changemakers that are honoring #MotherEarth and protecting future generations, at the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues on Tuesday, the second day of the two week forum.

"#EnergyTransfer's lawsuit against #Greenpeace is an attempt to silence the voices for Mother Earth, and Indigenous who are battling the #DakotaAccessPipeline, said #MorganBringsPlenty, #CheyenneRiverLakota , speaking at the #UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues.

"Brings Plenty said #Lakota youths are here to warn the global community about the rising threat of abusive lawsuits known as #SLAPP lawsuits, Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation.
She said the lawsuit of Energy Transfer, owner of the Dakota Access Pipeline, is an attack on the peaceful protest of #IndigenousPeoples at #StandingRock in North Dakota from May of 2016 to May of 2017, and is seeking $300 million in damages. It is expected to go to trial this summer.

"'The lawsuit against Greenpeace is also an attack on the Indigenous movement in our fight for self determination to protect Mother Earth, our water, sacred and cultural sites, our youths, and future generations.'

"In her passionate appeal to the U.N. Permanent Forum, Brings Plenty said the lawsuit is trying to silence anyone that is speaking out.

"'These colonial lawsuits are sending a warning to anyone who is thinking about speaking out to be quiet.'

"'Any of you could be next.'"

#KleeBenally 'Carry On'

By #BrendaNorrell, #CensoredNews, April 9, 2024

"Klee, discussing resource extraction, and how the #NavajoTribalCouncil was created to sign #oil and #gas leases, quotes our friend, the gentle, soft-spoken farmer from Shiprock, who received his doctorate degree before passing, Larry Emerson.

"'There is no point in trying to #decolonize the Navajo government -- it was not right for us from the start. Its structure and process is a replica of the American system, and the American system appears to be edging toward the possibility of failure like the great #RomanEmpire.'

"Writing on these monsters, oil and gas extraction, and coal mining, Klee quotes #LouiseBenally of #BigMountain, his aunt, whose family spent their lives resisting coal mining, #ForcedRelocation, and the machinery of the tribal government.

"Louise said, 'The natural laws and the Indigenous Peoples were already here in a good relationship before the coming of the #colonial society who draws laws and boundaries. However, we #IndigenousPeoples will always have ties with these lands, we will continue to live that way with #nature and we will carry on.'

"Klee shares the words of his grandmother, Roberta Blackgoat, who never gave up the fight. 'The Coal they strip mine is the Earth's liver."
Although many have passed, and too many have died from broken hearts, there are those who live on, carry on.

"Klee writes, 'The remaining resisters to forced relocation have outlived the monster that was consuming our lands, stealing our water, and polluting our lungs.'

"Before passing, Klee described the monsters, the rage against the machine, and the ways of restoring balance and harmony. Klee Benally's book, 'No Spiritual Surrender: Indigenous Anarchy in the Defense of the Sacred,' can be ordered at: detritusbooks.com/products/no-

'#SpacesOfException' #Resistance to the #FatTakers, from #NativeLands to #Palestine

"We might be the ones holding the knife -- but it is the state that is the one who is still killing us." Those are the words of #KleeBenally, in 'Spaces of Exception.'

by Brenda Norrell #CensoredNews
February 21, 2024

"In the Navajo language, there is no word for relocation, it means to disappear and never be seen again."

The film, 'Spaces of Exception,' now being shown around the world, begins on #PineRidge, with the history of the resistance to the 'fat takers,' and travels to the refugee camps of Palestine, before arriving at the land of #AkwesasneMohawk, and the words shared of true sovereignty.

"Then, there are the images of the #OilAndGas, the #fracking, and #coal mining on the #NavajoNation, where #Dine' say the true literacy once known, talking with the #NaturalWorld, is being lost. Now, there is the destruction of the burial and sacred places, as #asthma takes over lives.

"On #BlackMesa, before he passed, Klee championed his relatives resisting forced relocation brought by #PeabodyCoal.

"'Their greatest form of resistance is being who they are' 'The autonomy that we have is here.'"

"'Places of Exception,' begins with scenes from #WoundedKnee 1973, and Palestine refugee camps, and the words, 'Places defined by their historical and spiritual resistance.'

"'The buffalo owns us, we don't own the buffalo,' says #AlexWhitePlume, #OglalaLakota on Pine Ridge, sharing the importance of language, and the stories carried by the words, and the impacts of #genocide.

"'The buffalo shares the same story we share.'

"The film series, 'The Native and the Refugee' began on Pine Ridge with, 'We Love Being Lakota.' The latest film, 'Spaces of Exception,' concludes with the image of the flags at #OcetiSakowin #WaterProtectors Camp on #StandingRock.

"Among those in the series of films are #DebraWhitePlume, who talks about the 'Fat Takers,' and #OlowanSaraMartinez, Oglala Lakota of Pine Ridge, South Dakota, now in the Spirit World. Their bold stance as defenders of the water and people was manifest at the #RedWarriorCamp at Standing Rock, during the resistance to the #DakotaAccessPipeline in North Dakota.

"Spaces of Exception comes out of the long-term multimedia project 'The Native and the Refugee', profiling Native lands in the United States alongside #Palestinian refugee camps, and is directed by #MattPeterson and #MalekRasamny."

Warrior #KleeBenally Never Surrendered: A Life of #RevolutionaryLove, Resounding '#RegainYourPower

by Brenda Norrell, #CensoredNews, January 2, 2024

"Our hearts are broken by the sudden passing of our friend Klee Benally. Reflecting on Klee's life, we remember the words of #CheGuevara that the true revolutionary is guided by great feelings of love.

"Klee never surrendered, he never surrendered to #capitalism, the media, or the forces of conformity that sought to change who he was.

"Ultimately, Klee taught us to regain our power, regardless of the road that led us to the present.

"#LouiseBenally, #Dine' of Big Mountain, said, 'Klee was our spokesman and leader. His departure only means we have to rise and carry on the work for justice for #nature and humanity. I will miss him Greatly and Honor him highly.'

"His roots come from Big Mountain, grandson of the late #RobertaBlackgoat.

"'He was an honorable young leader, well respected and moved with a lot of compassion. My nephew brother and my leader. A truly beautiful and amazing person who really lived up to his beliefs, and was not driven by money but by needs and concern, a real warrior.

"'He was our shining Star, he will continue to shine on us from the other side.

"'He always honored me, I will miss that,' Louise said.

"#MichelleCook, Dine', said, "We are deeply saddened and shocked by the news of the passing of our beloved warrior Klee Benally. We ask for prayers for his family during this time. For decades Klee led an uncompromising position, for the liberation of our peoples and lands developing and synthesizing an embodied praxis of #Indigenous-based political, economic, and social resistance against all forms of #SettlerColonialism that degrades people and the planet.

"Klee was our North Star guiding with his heart and mind. While some may not have shared his positions, no one can question his dedication, determination, and sheer drive to protect his people despite the risks and danger.

"He risked his life through forms of #CivilDisobedience and #DirectAction to protect our Dook’o’oosłiid, #HolyMountain, from development to maintain our ceremonial practices and way of life.

"Klee taught us all to be brave to fight against #genocide, the co-optation of our movements by the non-profit #IndustrialComplex. To be steadfast in what is right and wrong. To honor our ancient law and the sacred teachings of our ancestors and Grandmothers. His departure leaves a void in #DinehNation and #IndianCountry," Michelle said.

"Now with his absence from this material plane, we have no choice but to pick up his work, pick up the slack, carry on, and continue our journey as Dineh in a beautiful way.

"Klee's development and articulations of Indigenous peoples and archaism remain relevant for social movements within and outside of #TurtleIsland.

"He will forever remain in our hearts and minds as a guiding light and a growling voice, screaming freedom, for our earth and peoples. We love you Klee.

"Rest now our sacred warrior. Your work is done. We are so proud of the legacy you cultivated and left for this world. Journey well our sweet warrior until we meet again in the great Star Camp beyond," Michelle said.

"Klee passed to the Spirit World on Sunday, after being hospitalized.

"We send our sincere condolences to his family, his wife Princess, family Jones, Berta, Jeneda and Clayson, and all those who knew and loved him.

"From locking down in U.S. #BorderPatrol headquarters in Tucson, to chaining himself to equipment in defense of Sacred San Francisco Peaks, to battling the auctioneers of the sacred ceremonial items in Paris, and leading the #HaulNo movement to protect the #GrandCanyon region from #UraniumMining, to feeding the #unsheltered in Flagstaff, and standing strong for #Palestine, Klee's powerful actions remain a moving force to resound, and rivet us all, to struggle for a world without compromise.

"Klee recognized that the non-profit industry was designed to water down the resistance and turn the sacred movements into an ATM machine for a select few.

"Fly high, my sweet friend."
