Anna's hummingbirds - the all-green ones - are resident all year round here.

Allen's (the orange and green ones) show up for just a little while starting in early spring.

This lovely Allen's is posed on a bare branch of the bottle brush in our nearby park. Its beak is slightly open but it is not feeding, far as I can tell, so I choose to think it's singing. (Which sounds to us like a series of clicks.)

Earl the Egret, here shown touching down in nearby marsh-grass, has been returning to the Marine Nature Study Area every spring for the past 25 years. A friendly bird, Egret hangs out with the staff when they seine, awaiting choice tidbits such as killifish, and sometimes hitches a ride on the the preserve's pick-up truck.

Yellow Elegance in the Wild

Easter is approaching, and the yellow peeps (spongia lutea) seem to be nesting in the trees. Or perhaps it’s actually a pine warbler (Setophaga pinus); from this angle, it’s hard to tell.
