Big question, Why ATProtocol from #BlueSkySocial #PBC’s mouth instead of Mastodon and ActivityPub?:

“Why not use ActivityPub? #ActivityPub is a federated social networking technology popularized by #Mastodon.

Account #portability is a major reason why we chose to build a separate protocol. We consider portability to be crucial because it protects #users from sudden bans, server shutdowns, and policy disagreements. Our #solution for portability requires both signed data repositories and #DIDs, neither of which are easy to retrofit into ActivityPub. The migration #tools for ActivityPub are comparatively limited; they require the original server to provide a redirect and cannot migrate the user's previous data.

Another major reason is #scalability. #ActivityPub depends heavily on delivering messages between a wide network of small-to-medium sized nodes, which can cause individual #nodes to be flooded with traffic and generally struggles to provide global views of #activity.”

Short version, WE CANT CONTROL YOU.

What is the AT Protocol?

Wikipedia: “The #ATProtocol (Authenticated Transfer Protocol, pronounced "@ protocol" and commonly shortened to ATProto) is a protocol and #OpenStandard for #distributed #socialNetworking services. It is under development by #BlueskySocial #PBC, a public benefit corporation originally created as an independent research group within #Twitter to investigate the possibility of #decentralizing the service.”

My coworker keeps telling me to create a #BlueskySocial account so that I can follow the weather meteos there, but I can't support another tech/crypto bro platform. Open source platforms and software have been the only solutions that haven't bitten me in the a$$ over the last 6 years.

@adam I understand the concern about Bluesky's finance model and potential problems in the future, but meanwhile people there are enjoying a kind, supportive, caring community full of creativity and joy. Such a refreshing and fun experience after the X hellscape. At least in the short term it's good to see Musk's influence diminished in some small way by the exodus of X users. From several posts I discern more than a bit of bitterness and sour grapes attitude toward #bluesky bout the fact that X users aren't flocking to the Fediverse instead. Extreme anti-capitalism seems to fuel a holier-than-thou Fediverse-is-the-one-true-faith attitude that I find a bit off-putting. #SocialMedia #social #blueskysocial #fediverse #mastodon

I haven’t tried to embed a post from one of the twitter alternatives I’ve been dicking around with for the last few months. Mastodon, Bluesky, or Threads. Threads is more or less winning the race but I haven’t given up on the other two yet. I wonder if the ability to embed posts into wordpress.com will be the deciding factor? Probably not.

Here’s one from Threads:

Here’s one from Bluesky:

Here’s one from Mastodon:

Hey! We have a winner! One out of three ain’t bad, even if it does look like utter and complete shit.

Havainto: Blueskyn Suomi-feedillä ja Mastodonin Suomalaiset-listallani on jotakuinkin yhtä paljon turinaa.

Toinen havainto: Bluesky-seinällä on lähes pelkkää facebookmaista kuulumista ihmisten tekemisistä eikä oikeastaan yhtään uudelleenpostauksia kun taas Mastodon-listalla mielenkiintoisia boostauksia ja keskitytään yhteiskunnallisiin aiheisiin, meemeihin ja mielenkiintoiseen sisältöön.

Seuraan Fediversumin kontenttia paljon mieluummin, Bluesky usein unohtuu. X ei ole edes päivä- tai viikkojärjestyksessä enää, se vasta unohtuukin. Ja hyvä niin.
