These selections give us a peek into what events and cultural phenomena in Japan captured people’s attention and imagination. However, this year’s announcement gene

alojapan.com/1256709/how-often How often do Japan’s buzzwords make it into the vernacular? #2024InReview #buzzwords #Japan #JapanNews #Japanese #JapaneseNews #kanji #language #news #nihongo #vocabulary The Kanji of the Year was announced Thursday, and for 2024 the Japanese Kanji Proficiency Society selected 金, which can be read “きん” and “かね,” and means “gold/money.” Every December, we look back on the language that permeated our societal discourse for the year to get…

Tonight I built and shipped my own personal Content Delivery Network 🚀

A FTP-accessible folder on a distant server with proper conf, a subdomain pointing to it, a root url added before every media link in my static site source code, and

✨ voilà ✨

Content
Delivered
through the Network.

Thank you, good night.

There are some buzzwords that definitely grind my gears more than others. Two that come to mind:

- elevate : usually a hollow attempt at selling you overpriced or useless things

- luxury x, x being anything from a house to a soap bar : usually an attempt at making you feel like you are better than those who cannot afford this particular object

What are some of yours ?

@Dexruus Yeah, but so is #Java or anything else that does that.

  • In fact, if it was something actually sensitive I'd not be surprised if they'd use #COBOL because that shit rules #ATM's or rather the #Backend of #Banks that deal with actual #Banking...

I don't think it's a good idea to choose a #ProgrammingLanguage based off #Hype and #Buzzwords but instead ask if the "Pain and Suffering" needed to do redundant work is worth it.

  • I.e. in the case of #Windows, redoing it in Rust would be a waste of time and money when the rational decision would be to kill it with fire and instead just invest the resources in #Wine and releasing all the #Windows #API's and #ABI's that #Microsoft used to prevent #MicrosoftOffice to run in Wine!

“Web3” and “AI”: adactio.com/articles/20290
Yup, @adactio nailed those definitions (pun intended). “Beware of the Law of the instrument. You know the one: when all you have is a hammer, everything looks a nail. There’s a corollary to that: when the market is investing heavily in hammers, everyone’s going to try to convince you that the world is full of nails. See if you can instead cultivate a genuine sense of nailspotting.”

@spreadmastodon I applaud the effort but I think the website is misleading and vague.

First of all, it doesn't explain well what #Mastodon actually is. Newbies won't understand. Like, what do people actually DO on Mastodon? The website doesn't tell.

And it's full of marketing #buzzwords like "maximize your experience" (#CRINGE). People HATE this.

Also, I have no idea what the "Enhance" button does and I don't want to find out.

Finally, "Join" literally suggests the biggest server. 😩
