Imagine trying to explain an electron by solely studying magnetism in excruciating detail as best we can with instruments designed to detect only what we theorise is measurable in a magnetic effect - I.e. to see what we wish to see. That is similar to what neurologists are doing by measuring brain cell activity as a way to identify, and hence classify, consciousness. Nate GaylinnI love the idea that consciousness is universal. We often talk like brains generate consciousness, but that's not quite right. They generate our perceptions and our thoughts—basically the contents of our consciousness. But why does that feel like something? And why should we assume people or animals with brains are the only ones that have it? Every living thing senses and adapts to the world around them, even plants and microbes. Maybe they're just mechanical stimulus-response machines, but maybe they have some minimal form of conscious experience? qurlyjoeI’m disappointed nobody seems to have picked on my idea that <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/NicoleTheFediverseChick" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#NicoleTheFediverseChick</a> is a <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/consciousness" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#consciousness</a> emergent from the myriad synapse-like connections of the <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/fediverse" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#fediverse</a>. It’s been trying to get our attention, the best way it knows how, presenting as a hot female, sort of knocking on the windows. And we just make a meme of her, and ridicule her.
