Canada Post should be the exclusive delivery service in Canada

(This letter was sent to the Globe and Mail on May 21, 2025) Dear Editor, Re: "Canada Post workers could strike again. If they do, the public will see red" Why would the public blame workers, the people they see every day at their door, when it is clearly the incompetence and intransigence of the employer and their silent backers in Government that have bled Canada Post dry for decades and pinned the blame on employees. The silent direction from Liberal and Conservative governments […]

I've been trying out doing double-duty delivery, Door Dash and Uber Eats, at the same time.

There are a number of problems.

1) In my small town, DD still rules, there just aren't the same number of UE. Long stretches of the night will go without a single UE order.

2) Juggling the two apps is possible, but you're left hoping that an order from DD is in the same direction as one from UE. They usually aren't.

3) Because of 2), you have to choose whether to pause or go offline, which (I think) impacts the algorithm and leads to fewer orders, or less valuable ones.

4) Customers really don't like (understandably) if they see you veering off route to another store (even when its an order on the same app!) so ratings are at even bigger risk if you don't make the timings.

5) UE seems to have far fewer tips, so overall, if it werent for the $15 "quests" of extra cash to complete an order the pay is not as good.

6) This is all more stressful.

Conclusion:

I think I'm just gonna stick to DD exclusively for now unless daily totals start going down or its a super slow night.

#today hopefully the new tires will come, ordered from Tire Rack mounted, balanced & with new sensors, just have to bolt them on the Bolt and program the new sensors, and we're back in action and working tomorrow. Unfortunately I didn't get a route Fri, nor did I today, though obviously today turned out to be a good thing, so this week is going to be below income goal, might have to work the whole weekend if'n I can find work.

#ICE director Todd Lyons: "We need to get better at treating this like a #business ,where this #mass #deportation operation is something like you would see and say, like #Amazon trying to get your Prime #delivery within 24 hours. [...] So trying to figure out how to do that with #human beings.”

Delivery

The last time I bought something form guitar center’s website they gave me a delivery date, told me the package was out for delivery, and then didn’t deliver it. They did this two or three days in a row. When it finally arrived they had failed to pack the power cable and when I complained they asked why I needed it… it was a guitar amplifier… was I supposed to use it without power?

I had forgotten about all of that when, this weekend, I ordered a pedal from guitar center’s website. Today is the delivery day. It has been showing as out for delivery since 9:36am. The estimated delivery time says it should arrive between 11:30am and 2:30pm. It is now 2:47 and it has not been delivered yet.

Yeah, I should have known better. I’m never getting that (relatively) cheap little digital reverb pedal, am I. I’m an idiot. Just call me sucker.

ADDENDUM: I got an email notification saying the package was delivered. I guess all it took was me complaining about it on the internet. Heh, as if.

Crazy Day Coming

Last night Jen and I stayed at the hotel that is hosting her company’s function. I got up at 5:30, took a shower, and drove home. It’s a little wacky, but I am working from home on a day when we aren’t actually home. Does that make sense? No? So what, it’s how it is. Heh.

Tomorrow I will work in the office, so I’ll be driving there from the hotel instead of from home. That’s going to be weird too. I was thinking that I would bring my camera with me and wander around the city after work tonight, but if I am going straight to work in the morning I will have my work laptop with me… so I think I will be going to the hotel after work, and it will be late enough that the sun will be down by the time I get there and put my stuff away. So maybe I won’t be wandering around the city after all. Maybe I’ll just stay in the room and watch Daredevil while I wait for Jen to come back from her post-work, work-events.

We’ll see. I did tell Jen that if I happen on a music store in my wandering and said music store had a Gibson guitar for sale for under $1,000, then I am totally buying it. I should see if I can make that promise come true. Heh heh.

Anyway, time to get ready for work. There is a contractor coming this afternoon as well as a delivery that I have to open the door for. All of that on top of having a crazy busy schedule. It’s going to be a weird one today. Big time.

Say you have an opportunity to do whatever it takes to get something done.
Or you are forced on a dramatic shipping deadline.
