A further word on a digital notebook; @obsidian is so far my favourite, and would highly recommend.
Solid features, great plugins, and it's all in Markdown files, so if you every really need to, you can escape and use something else.
Got burned the hard way by #Evernote as to how important that last bit is
I had been thinking I'd like to quit #Evernote for some time, and Evernote finally pushed me to make the leap by suddenly trying to extort more money from me for the same service. I installed #Joplin (open source!), exported my Evernote notes, imported them into Joplin, cancelled my Evernote plan, and deleted everything. Coincidentally, my Amazon Prime account expired a few days ago. These days, evil corporations make it easier to quit them by being completely crass about their money grubbing. (And when I say "money grubbing" I include trying to make money off your private data by selling it to LLMs or anyone else.)
Of course, if you do have long-time plans for your personal #knowledgemanagement, you should not use proprietary tools like #Obsidian, #OneNote, #Evernote and alike.
You also should think of switching to a much better (learnability, portability/compatibility, typobility, logic, featureset) markup syntax like #orgdown which is used in #Emacs #Orgmode (among other tools).
But if you start with Org-mode, you need to know the right way of doing it, as so many web pages recommend. Here's my take:
#UOMF: The Right Way to Use #OrgMode

A specific blog post about the #lockin effects of Obsidian and Co (despite using some tool-specific flavor of MD) is in the making. (Please don't start a religious discussion here.)
@holgi

„Goodbye, #Komoot? German app sold to Bending Spoons“
There are apps that make a difference: For people who like to spend time outdoors, Komoot from Potsdam, Germany has always been a good option. Now the future may be unclear as the app is apparently being sold to Italy-based Bending Spoons, who have already bought #WeTransfer and #Evernote.

For those who read German, #Heise gives some more connections in an article from last August.
Tl;dr: #BendingSpoons, the Italian company who took over #StreamYard, also bought #Hopin, #Meetup, #Issuu and #WeTransfer, and already a while ago #Evernote.

@double_virgule @TheBreadmonkey
very much agreed - I changed from #EverNote after 10 years in the end of 2022 to #Obsidian - and I’m quite happy with it, especially with having full control of my notes/ data
but yes, we are in charge of the backups (regularly manual + time machine) & syncs (via iCloud) ourselves
I migrated from #evernote to @joplinapp , because Evernote in the browser performed bad for me. Their upselling messages got on my nerves.
To synchronize my devices, I used file sync with #syncthing . But the synchronization performance wasn't very good to my mobile.
I recently discovered self-hosting with Joplin Server, even for arm64. Thanks to the community for their great work.
Now it works with a custom CA for my home lab and my Android device. I love it. Notes taken is fun again.
Anyone out there want to try a 1 year, Pro Version of Notesnook for free?
There is no obligation to extend the subscription at the end.
There is no need to sign up with a credit card.
Notesnook is an #OpenSource, #Encrypted, #Notetaking app in heavy development, and a great alternative to #Evernote.
I have a one year gift-subscription to give away for the first person to comment with the answer to this question: "Who played the drums on Steely Dan's "Kid Charlemagne"?
Dipping several toes into the #Joplin self-hosted water this morning, as my longstanding #Evernote sub finally ends tomorrow.
Now running Joplin desktop, importing my Evernote note export from a git tool, plus Joplin Server on a Pi 5 with NVMe hat behind 2 nginx proxies running double certbot.
Not sure why everyone doesn't just self-host.

“#Evernote to #OneNote, #Moleskine to #FieldNotes, #Roam to #Obsidian. We blame the tools, the techniques. Surely they’re to blame. A new app will be better.” [...] “I’m not writing it down to remember it later,” declares every Field Notes notebook, “I’m writing it down to remember it now.”
So of course I re-set the article as #Markdown in #DEVONthink.
Around the time of the change of ownership of #Twitter, I did one of those honking great backups of all my data. Since then it’s just been sitting around doing nothing.
Having just recently written tools to convert #Journey and #Evernote data into #Obsidian vaults, I've decided it's time to do the same for my tweets. Early days, lots more stuff I want to sprinkle over it, and lots of fun Obsidian things I want to make use of with the data.
But it's working.
