I've put in a deposit on a Framework Laptop 12 DIY Edition. Looks like ham radio was the thing that finally got me to commit to Linux!
Looking forward to using it for:
- Portable operation (POTA, public service, etc)
- Dire Wolf for APRS
- Reading and marking up ham .pdfs
WHICH DISTRO
h/t to @KR4BVU for turning me on to Framework.
Right to repair, but not to fix security?
Framework’s philosophy empowers users to open, upgrade, and repair their devices. But with great openness comes a security catch.
On the Framework 13, pressing the chassis intrusion switch 10 times resets the BIOS, removing passwords, Secure Boot, and more.
We flagged this to Framework. Their response?
"It's a feature..."
That’s risky. This reset might help with recovery, but it also hands an attacker physical access to critical settings.
Kieran explains the issue, what this means for security, and how to protect your device.

If you're wondering, I've had Fedora KDE Plasma on the laptop since I got it over a year ago. I decided to back up my files and get a clean start, but switching to Gnome (using standard caps for screen readers).
You may be wondering how I got here... but all I can tell you is sometimes one needs a fresh start in life
The Framework 16 laptop detects when it's booted partially assembled. It boots into a special mode to walk you through completing the assembly. The screen updates to reflect your progress and prompt the next step. This requires no tools to complete. Impressive! Watch:
Since it's been a little over a year since I got my Framework Laptop 16 and have been using Fedora Linux on there, I published a new blog post with my thoughts on the laptop and my experience has been daily driving Fedora for a year.
https://linhpham.org/blog/2025/one-year-with-framework-laptop-16-fedora-kde-desktop/
@frameworkcomputer Found it: It's on the configuration page. When you open the details behind the processors, it shows that currently batch 1 has been shipped and batches 2-6 are planned for July.
Update: They've agreed to send me the parts "as an exception". Better than nothing, but I'd rather non-Australian companies would recognise their legal obligations with more grace.
Mmmm. Framework are giving me the run around with sending me a replacement keyboard for my laptop. My delete key stopped working properly a while back. Other early adopters have had similar problems: https://community.frame.work/t/broken-delete-key-like-literally-stopped-working/37313
They're saying I'm outside their 1-year warranty so I have to buy my own replacement keyboard. USD$80 delivered.
Australian consumer guarantees beg to differ. Hopefully they do the right thing.
Does someone now if the #framework12 from @frameworkcomputer already started shipping? And if so which batch currently ships?
Just asking because I am eagerly waiting for mine.
I never did a follow-up to my Framework 13 first look video back in 2023. But with the recent troubleshooting/RMA experience I had, maybe it's time to write a new video. Only slightly clickbaity.
TIL that the lid close sensor on the #FrameworkLaptop is on the audio / mic jack board. If you don't reconnect it properly when you swap the mainboard... your laptop doesn't know when the lid is closed, clamshell connections to hubs think the screen needs to stay on, and it doesn't go to sleep properly...
(separately to fixing that, I still need to get suspend/hibernate working again, something is wrong there as well)
Working on being fully on-brand - new transparent purple bezel for my #FrameworkLaptop (and some transparent purple expansions too, not visible from this angle).
Was für ein Spaß. Bisher ein lange so nicht mehr gehabtes Erlebnis. Laptopzusammenbau in der DIY Edition. Naja, zumindest ein Bisschen.

You should be able to fix your stuff. Das neue Framwork-Laptop ist da! Love. So aufgeregt war ich schon lange nicht mehr.

I just realized... it's been a lot closer to a year since I've started the process of switching from macOS to Linux as my daily driver.
In about two weeks, it'll be a year since I got my @frameworkcomputer Laptop 16 and started installing and setting up the, then, KDE spin of Fedora 40.

https://linhpham.org/blog/2024/migrating-from-macos-fedora-framework-laptop-16/
So I finally did it: I put in a preorder for the new @frameworkcomputer laptop 12. It'll run @fedora and @kde and will be my Emacs and coding machine.
I've been loving exploring Emacs on my test device (an old Dell 5300 from work) and the form factor of the laptop feels perfect.
Now I have to wait for my order to be shipped (which will feel like decades).
