#FrameworkLaptop

I've put in a deposit on a Framework Laptop 12 DIY Edition. Looks like ham radio was the thing that finally got me to commit to Linux!

Looking forward to using it for:
- Portable operation (POTA, public service, etc)
- Dire Wolf for APRS
- Reading and marking up ham .pdfs

h/t to @KR4BVU for turning me on to Framework.

FrameworkLinux Compatibility on the Framework LaptopWe designed the Framework Laptop from the outset to be a great Linux laptop, and the Framework Laptop DIY Edition comes with no OS loaded to let you bring your favorite Linux distribution. We deliberately selected components and modules that didn’t require new kernel driver development and have been

🔧 Right to repair, but not to fix security?

Framework’s philosophy empowers users to open, upgrade, and repair their devices. But with great openness comes a security catch.

On the Framework 13, pressing the chassis intrusion switch 10 times resets the BIOS, removing passwords, Secure Boot, and more.

We flagged this to Framework. Their response?
"It's a feature..."

That’s risky. This reset might help with recovery, but it also hands an attacker physical access to critical settings.

Kieran explains the issue, what this means for security, and how to protect your device.

Mmmm. Framework are giving me the run around with sending me a replacement keyboard for my laptop. My delete key stopped working properly a while back. Other early adopters have had similar problems: community.frame.work/t/broken-

They're saying I'm outside their 1-year warranty so I have to buy my own replacement keyboard. USD$80 delivered.

Australian consumer guarantees beg to differ. Hopefully they do the right thing.

Framework Community · Broken delete key - like literally stopped workingThe delete key on my laptop stopped working for no clear reason. All the other keys are fine, it’s just the delete key that doesn’t work. When it first stopped working, I could bend the case a bit to get it to restart; now that doesn’t work at all. Does anyone have any suggestions or should I just by a new input cover or something?

TIL that the lid close sensor on the #FrameworkLaptop is on the audio / mic jack board. If you don't reconnect it properly when you swap the mainboard... your laptop doesn't know when the lid is closed, clamshell connections to hubs think the screen needs to stay on, and it doesn't go to sleep properly...

(separately to fixing that, I still need to get suspend/hibernate working again, something is wrong there as well)

Continued thread

I just realized... it's been a lot closer to a year since I've started the process of switching from macOS to Linux as my daily driver.

In about two weeks, it'll be a year since I got my @frameworkcomputer Laptop 16 and started installing and setting up the, then, KDE spin of Fedora 40.
