Figured this rainy day and night would get them to start coming out and about, had to go on a night walk to see who’s around. Saw around 6 Wood Frogs (one of which is in photo below; none calling yet), 2 Spring Peepers (lots more calling), and 6 Spotted Salamanders. It’s just the beginning though!

Cleaned up some of the pond, but those long leaves/fronds are tough to break up, even in death.
A little while later and things are hopping, so to speak. I’m starting to suspect these are the toads we get early in the season. We'll see if there's ungodly singing tonight with strands of eggs scattered around the pond like an unravelled sweater.

Further to my recent post about frogspawn, I'm happy to report that it has all hatched out. Hundreds of juvenile tadpoles have wriggled free of the 'jelly' and can now be seen feeding on it. They have been joined by a pond snail which is also tucking into this nutritious substance. The red caterpillar-like things are catkins from the silver birch and poplar trees that overlook the pond.

Best of luck to the Great Lakes Marsh Monitoring Program frog surveyors who get to start surveying #wetlands. Frogs are starting to call in our southern portions of the #GreatLakes watershed/

'Pond life' is sometimes used as an insult applied to particularly contemptible people but I feel that this is unfair to actual pond-dwelling creatures which, by contrast, are mostly harmless and frequently fascinating lifeforms.
Frogspawn is a case in point. You can see that our tiny garden pond is full of the stuff. Zoom in and you can tell that the embryos are starting to elongate towards the shape of a tadpole.
