Daily Software Post

This is Mastodon so you should all know about F-Droid.

You can't find it on the play store, but this is a 3rd party app repository (not store) that exclusively hosts free and open source software. There are some amazing apps here, it's where I found jtx Board, an awesome note taking app.

Lots of gems on there!

1,6 miljoonaa Android-sovellusta katosi Google Play -kaupasta

Taustalla on viime vuoden heinäkuussa kiristynyt Googlen laadunvalvonta Android-sovellusten osalta. Lopputuloksena Google Playssa saatavilla olevien sovellusten määrä romahti 3,4 miljoonasta 1,8 miljoonaan.

I think the #LightPhone3 is better than a shitty "#ProducedEwaste" #Android 8.1 brick from China but I don't consider it worth the premium asked [U$D 799 MSRP, U$D 599 preorder] for it.

I think people can get a better experience buying a #degoogled #Fairphone with #eOS and just put #RelaunchX as an #eInk-optimized #launcher on it and have a better option.

  • But I guess given #ForProfitHealthcare in the #USA is expensive I can see why a lot of people would rather buy such a device and sell their old one than seek therapy if they are susceptible to shitty patterns that #developers harness to maximize #screentime and #revenue.

Can't have #doomscrolling or #microtransactions if it doesn't support #NSAbook's #apps or shitty #PayToLoose #games...

What I do have to say is that #MKBHD acknowledges that he isn't the target audience and "that's fine"...

  • I just think that requiring people to sign up to some account just to be able to add/remove #Apps is a major #nope in my book.

I stayed off #GooglePlay for longer than it's being called like that and their "#lightOS" is most likely some tightly locked-down Android...

  • It's just an insultingly high pricetag for < $200 internals and the best feature they have isn't even the phone but offering a "no frills" plan which seems okay (by #USA standards!) but still...

I think people would be more accepting if it was a $299 or even $399 device, but at a price of a @monocles #phone whilst being way less versatile it's just not worth it.

  • Cuz it's not even a super "secure" device or offers something like a "concierge service" where the device price is artifically high to filter out average #WageWorkers without much disposable income...

Google wprowadza ciekawą funkcję do androida, a dokładniej do aplikacji
Google Play Services.
Powoduje ona, że po 3 dniach nieużywania telefonu, który jest zablokowany, Telefon się uruchomi ponownie i będzie czekać na wpisanie pinu, a do tego czasu, dane na telefonie będą zaszyfrowane.

@dec_hl I think something like an #App #curator site that allows #filtering / has said filters set by default as a "#SafeSearch" would be propably best...

Not to mention it'll get #downranked and #shadowbanned from both platfirms pretty quickly.

I have been quite happy with /e/os on my #fairphone #FP3 the last few years - but it is beginning to deteriorate lately, with more and more apps not being able to run. #mobilepay for one, but now also #garmin #navionics #boating - since last update it will not show my location, it keeps asking for permission - which it already have. I can downgrade for now, but it is not really a viable solution I believe. So what to do? I really dislike the idea of having to install #googleplay services :(

I believe we really need an alternative #mobile os. A truely google free android would be fine with me for now, while a more navtive #linux becomes feasible and commercial/public app providers realizes that there is a need for #flatpak releases.

Meanwhile, could #e_os (#microG) be fixed somehow?

UPDATE: downgrading to version 2.22 of garmin boating fixed the issue for now.

Lost almost an hour fiddling with the #homeassistant companion #app settings trying to make the #location work (my location is always "unknown"). At the end I found, hidden in a forum answer ( https://community.home-assistant.io/t/device-tracker-and-geocoded-location-unknown/230569/18?u=penguin86 ) that is a limitation of the home assistant app published on #fdroid .
WTF why is the F-droid version more limited than the one on #googleplay ? The position funcionality shouldn't depend on google services or proprietary code, I made a couple of completely open source apps that requires location services and both work perfectly... Anyone can explain?
Home Assistant Community · Device_tracker and geocoded location 'Unknown'I was having the same issue on my Android phone and nothing on this topic helped me. Turns out the F-Droid release lacks several features like location tracking and Wear OS integration (hence the “minimal” on the version number). So I had to install the Google Play Store version for everything to work properly.

#Catima 2.34.5 is out!

This is a maintenance release that targets Android 15 and fixes a crash.

The app will look slightly uglier on some devices, due to Google's changes in how drawing over the system and navigation bar works. Sadly, supporting proper edge-to-edge requires extensive rewrites (help very welcome!), so I opted to at least ensure we target Android 15 before any deadlines.

Coming soon to an app store near you.
