Rigged up for… nothing.

The #ZCamE2 is a really nice elderly #videoCamera with a still very usable 4k output in #h265 or #ProRes and just this week I discovered that its #zCamApp actually turns an elderly #iPad (at least #IOS 15 required) into a powerful monitor even with the option for false color display, RGB parade, focus peaking, touch-to-focus and whatnot.

I just love the image from this camera.

However, I don't have the muse for my own creative projects, actually decent film/video projects usually are huge… and my clients don't have no money no more for video.

It's not that people wouldn't want to have videos anymore. It's just that they feel content with their smartphones' output all to soon, so who would pay this nerd to do a 4k cinema image for them, just for nobody to watch it on #YouTube because they didn't trigger the algorithm properly.

Btw, this camera is also a #livestream monster and I own two of its smaller siblings, the #E2C. All fully remote-controllable and good image.

@ezra personally I think #Apple should be forced.to implement #AV1 & #WebM and that @EUCommission could mandate #OpenStandards.

  • As for quality, were it not for #patents and espechally #SoftwarePantents, we'd have way better #Codecs, but this way people engineering a #FLOSS #Codec are constantly required to specifically avoid infringement of Patents and other IP by not using anything remotely related to it...

Also if #H265 wasn't #patented and facing #PatentTrolls and #rentseekers we'd see way better quality there as well.

  • Cuz #CCSS & #FLOSS can't share code nor expertise at all.

And yes, Apple (#MPEGLA-Member) is at the root of the problem!

Wet-Dry Worlda number 6 with ezra dip :neocat_flag_androgyne: (@ezra@wetdry.world)not that vp9 is bad quality, leagues better than h264, just not as good as the others imo. i'd say please use vp9 for web video but unfortunately Tim Apple and we're stuck with h264 because iphone users exist EDIT this is not a slight at iphone users, keep using what works for you, did not mean for this to hit so hard with the fossbros lol, this is a slight at tim apple

The last days i wanted to deliver a video (as a static video file) on my webserver to friends. Personally i mostly use #vp9 / #opus codec in #webm container. This worked everywhere but on #iOS. I do not have an Iphone so i could not test it before.

I tried to get vp9 working (and ask friends to test again), but couldn't get it work, though there are many announcements that Safari will supports it (in 2020). Then i tried #h265 / #hvec in mp4 container because Iphones use this for encoding their recorded videos. So i thought this must work. But also that did not work.

Afterwards i found this guide who tells that #Safari only accepts #h264 static video files. Everything else has to be delivered by #HLS. Does anyone knows why? Is there a technical reason why accepting h265 videos in hls but not in static file? https://developer.apple.com/documentation/webkit/delivering_video_content_for_safari

During my research i found many different arguments why iPhones did not support vp9 (due to missing hardware decoders or because it increases code complexity). I can understand that but i can not tell you if this is the real reason (or just because its a standard of Google). But on the otherside i found information that Apple supports VP9 with HLS. but does not say this official.

PS: I know i could just use standard h264 encoding, but i wanted to have small video size and i thought that ios will accecpt at least any format that is newer than h264.
