On 25 May 2018 the Irish people voted by 66.4% to overturn the 8th Amendment, ending the Abortion Ban. Previously abortion was only allowed when a woman's life is at risk, but not in cases of rape, incest or fatal foetal abnormality. The only constituency to vote against repealing the Eighth amendment was Donegal, with 51.9% voting against the change.

The Irish Rebellion of 1798 (Éirí Amach) started on 24 May. It was a major uprising against British rule in Ireland. The main organising force was the Society of United Irishmen, a republican revolutionary group influenced by the ideas of the American and French revolutions: originally formed by Presbyterian radicals angry at being shut out of power by the Anglican establishment, they were joined by many from the majority Catholic population.

It is indeed "a carnival of distraction" as was, on the other side of the Atlantic, the farcical ambush of the president of South Africa with accusations of a fake genocide the main purpose of which seems to have been to distract from an all too real one.

John Sheahan was born on 19 May 1939 in Dublin. He is an Irish musician and composer and the last surviving member of the definitive five-member line-up of The Dubliners. He joined The Dubliners in 1964 and played with them until 2012 when The Dubliners' name was retired following the death of founding member Barney McKenna.

On the 19 May 1966 Seamus Heaney’s first collection of poetry "Death of a Naturalist" was published by Faber and Faber. The first poem in the book was "Digging". It also contained "Blackberry-Picking" and "Mid-Term Break".

Heaney was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1995 for "works of lyrical beauty and ethical depth, which exalt everyday miracles and the living past".

It has been suggested that the bombings were intended to wreck the Sunningdale Agreement and to make both the Irish and British governments take a stronger line against the IRA. The Sunningdale Agreement envisaged a role for the Irish government in the administration of Northern Ireland. The British government actively obstructed an investigation by Mr Justice Henry Barron, an Irish judge, into the bombings in 2003. 2/2
