#DailySpiderPic: "Well, this is awkward…" An ant-mimic jumping spider (_Synageles_) crosses paths with a _Prenolepis imparis_ ant. Its disguise is meant to put off potential predators that won't mess with ants—but the ants themselves rely more on chemical cues and aren't fooled. I saw a couple of _Synageles_ on this planter and they both carefully avoided the ants.

I grabbed a large male midge from a wall nearby—they're still swarming—and slowly waved it in front of the hole. A surprisingly large bold jumping spider (_Phidippus audax_) emerged, seized it from my fingers, and went back in. Then she turned around and sat as before, with her head just out of the hole, eating the midge. (2/2)

#Arachtober 23: from June, a long-legged velvet mite (family Erythraeidae) climbs into a silk retreat over the exuvia (molted exoskeleton) of the jumping spider (family Salticidae) that previously occupied it. This is not the first time I have seen mites using old spider retreats for shelter!
