Marce Coll<p>After some learning with zones and the crossbow virtualized networking system I now have successfully migrated <a href="https://katarineko.com" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">katarineko.com</span><span class="invisible"></span></a> into my <a href="https://functional.cafe/tags/omnios" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>omnios</span></a> system!</p><p>It's currently not hosting the main site yet while I try that everything works correctly, the <a href="https://functional.cafe/tags/illumos" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>illumos</span></a> deployment is in <a href="https://beta.katarineko.com" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">beta.katarineko.com</span><span class="invisible"></span></a>.</p><p>The stack is <a href="https://functional.cafe/tags/elixir" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>elixir</span></a> (with some <a href="https://functional.cafe/tags/rust" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>rust</span></a> NIFs, using <a href="https://functional.cafe/tags/phoenix" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>phoenix</span></a> and <a href="https://functional.cafe/tags/ash" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ash</span></a>), <a href="https://functional.cafe/tags/postgres" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>postgres</span></a> and <a href="https://functional.cafe/tags/rabbitmq" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>rabbitmq</span></a> </p><p>It was all quite painless except for a couple of libraries I had to write patches for.</p>
Marce Coll<p>In the spirit of the recent <a href="https://functional.cafe/tags/illumoscafe" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>illumoscafe</span></a> inaguration I'll share this guide from my recent <a href="https://functional.cafe/tags/omnios" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>omnios</span></a> setup.</p><p>I rented a very beefy (256GB ECC RAM 32/64 core AMD EPYC CPU) to build the infra for my personal projects on <a href="https://functional.cafe/tags/illumos" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>illumos</span></a> on <a href="https://functional.cafe/tags/hetzner" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>hetzner</span></a> </p><p>The install was fairly painless although a bit involved, to anyone trying the same, here is a small guide:</p><p>+ Open a rescue image and take a note of the IP + netmask + gateway<br>+ Ask for a KVM through the support tab.<br>+ Attach <a href="https://functional.cafe/tags/omnios" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>omnios</span></a> ISO to the KVM and reboot the system<br>+ Enter boot menu (in the case of my server it was with DEL) and boot from the virtual cd drive. <br>+ Install as normal, it's fairly straightforward<br>+ At the end configure the system and set the networking configuration you wrote at the start. Remember to enable SSH daemon!<br>+ Reboot and go into boot menu again, change the boot order to boot from one of your disks.<br> + This may not be needed under some cases, in my case the intel boot manager didn't recognize the illumos bootloader so I had to do this.<br> + This will break some things, since Intel boot manager is the one that starts the rescue image, be aware that for future rescue operations you'll need to ask for a KVM (first three hours are free) <br>+ IMPORTANT, because this tripped me and it took me a bit too much time to find out. OmniOS disables VGA output by default, so while you are attached to with the KVM you'll see the output freeze, in my case it continued booting but without any VGA output. Wait a bit and try to SSH into it after a while.<br>+ You now have OmniOS in a beefy and cheap server from hetzner auction!</p><p>Hope this was useful!</p>

Stefano Marinelli<p>As a Barista at BSD Cafe, I'm also an admirer of tea – a metaphor for my appreciation of the good features of other operating systems. And the fact that I like and support BSDs doesn't mean I don't appreciate those other solutions. <br>For example, <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/SmartOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SmartOS</span></a>, <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/OmniOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OmniOS</span></a>, and <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Tribblix" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Tribblix</span></a> are superb examples of well-crafted operating systems. </p><p>Similarly, <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Linux</span></a> - <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/openSUSE" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>openSUSE</span></a> Tumbleweed-based desktops give me a lot of satisfaction every day.</p><p>The foundation of my passion for Open Source also stems from the ability to study, explore, and choose without constraints or restrictions. Claudius Link<p>TIL about the existence of <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/OmniOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OmniOS</span></a></p><p>This brings me to a little <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/Rant" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Rant</span></a> </p><p>Please, by the name of whatever, write your website (at least the about section) with someone in mind who encounters your "subject" for the first time! </p><p>Let's get back to OmniOS example:</p><p>The home page opens with<br>"The Open Source Enterprise Server OS with just the features you need"</p><p>Knowing nothing before, I don't know significantly more now</p><ul><li>the OS (operating system) part was clear,</li><li>"Enterprise Server" are buzzwords unhelpful for further search</li><li>just the features I need?!? For now i just "need" to figure out what it is!!!</li></ul><p>This just leaves the information that it is Open Source, nice</p><p>Ok, let's check the "About" page.</p><p>There i learn that OmniOS was initially developed by OmniTI, the exact date when they announced the end, the existence of the OmniOS Community Edition Association (OmniOSce)</p><p>But still no real idea what it is</p><p>Funny enough a link leading to a The Register article (I accidentally clicked) shows how it can be done better</p><p>"OmniOS – an Oracle-free open-source variant of Solaris"</p><p>Now I know what it is, or or if i wouldn't, I could at least could search for Solaris to learn more.</p><p>While this rant was inspired by and used OmniOS as a (negative) example it's not limited to OmniOS and doesn't say anything about it's qualities.</p>
