Good morning. 🕊️🕊️🕊️

1 May 2025

May has arrived, and with it, May Day. At first, I thought we didn't really celebrate it here, but then I remembered the annual May festival downtown. My wife has set up a booth a few times to sell her quilting products. Quilts are a tough sell—while beautiful and intricate, they require significant effort to make and can range from a few hundred to a thousand dollars, making them more of an investment than an impulse buy. To appeal to a wider audience, she also showcases smaller items like baby sets and teddy bears. Her sports-themed teddy bears, especially those featuring Saints and LSU fabric, are quite popular. They often come dressed up, adding to their charm and making them a big hit at the festival.

Despite my lack of experience in birdwatching at the time, I could tell that the parents did a terrible job at taking care of them (I couldn't believe how long they would leave them alone at times, and it's not warm in Paris in the Spring).

Nowadays, I assume that they were first-time parents or something (learning to be a parent when you're a bird often involves not succeeding at raising your first generation of offsprings.

Some birds build mind-blowing nests, and then you have pigeons, who half-ass a bunch of twigs on a flat surface, call it a day and a nest. And I only noticed this one (on campus) because a good number of the twigs were so poorly arranged that they fell on the ground (it's right next to the elevator to my office).
I still wonder how the species hasn't darwin-awarded its existence into extinction yet. ⤵️

Clash of the Plumage

While Charlie and I sat out back this morning, I watched these two rock pigeons (Columba livia) duke it out around the corner of a bird feeder. The bird on the right, with its left side toward the camera, eventually yielded the bird feeder and hopped to the ground.

I've read that pigeons are sexually dimorphic, but I have trouble telling the sexes apart. Nevertheless, I believe these two are males.

If you're a fan of stunning dove imagery, be sure to explore my photo gallery for a collection of beautiful snapshots that capture their elegance and charm.
