🔐 Cryptomator vs. VeraCrypt — which encryption tool is right for you?

We’ve compared both in a detailed breakdown of their use cases, strengths, and key differences — especially when it comes to cloud storage and user-friendliness.

Devices like the PinePhone and Librem 5 are slowly carving out space for open mobile computing. These are not sleek consumer devices built for mass market appeal. They are platforms built by and for developers, hackers, and those who demand control over their hardware. With full root access, modular apps, and support for desktop-grade Linux distros like postmarketOS, Mobian, and Arch ARM, they challenge the locked-down nature of traditional smartphones.

While performance and battery life still lag behind mainstream phones, the focus is on freedom: running your own code, replacing parts, and escaping corporate ecosystems. For privacy advocates and tinkerers alike, Linux phones represent a small but significant shift in how we think about mobile tech.

I'm curious to hear what others are #SelfHosting! Here's my current setup:

Hardware & OS

Infrastructure & Networking

Security & Monitoring

Authentication & Identity Management

  • Authelia (Docker): Just set this up for two-factor authentication and single sign-on. Seems to be working well so far!
  • LLDAP (Docker): Lightweight LDAP server for managing authentication. Also seems to be working pretty well!
    #AuthenticationTools #IdentityManagement

Productivity & Personal Tools

Notifications & Development Workflow

  • Notifications via: #Ntfy (Docker) and Zoho's ZeptoMail (#Zoho)
  • Development Environment: Mostly using VSCode connected to my server via Remote-SSH extension. #VSCodeRemote

Accessibility Focus ♿🖥️

Accessibility heavily influences my choices—I use a screen reader full-time (#ScreenReader), so I prioritize services usable without sight (#InclusiveDesign#DigitalAccessibility). Always open to discussing accessibility experiences or recommendations!

I've also experimented with:

  • Ollama (#Ollama): Not enough RAM on my Pi.
  • Habit trackers like Beaver Habit Tracker (#HabitTracking): Accessibility issues made it unusable for me.

I don't really have a media collection, so no Plex or Jellyfin here (#MediaServer)—but I'm always open to suggestions! I've gotten a bit addicted to exploring new self-hosted services! 😄

What's your setup like? Any cool services you'd recommend I try?

@blogdiva @protonprivacy Ah...this might answer my question about StartPage.
discuss.privacyguides.net/t/re
I'm not familiar with System1 as a company.

I have tried using Privacy Tools (privacytools.io) @privacytools to look things up. They listed Startpage/Startmail on there but this thread has me hmmmm.....

@film_girl
With you 100% on this. Data portability is a problem. I’m not sure how much of the blame for that is attributable to the ActivityPub protocol vs. implementations like Mastodon.

I’ve been on nodes that spontaneously lock users out, after which there is no way for users to reach their data. They just pull the plug & walk away. Or they join the gian oppressive #walledGarden of Cloudflare (e.g. social. #privacytools.io) w/out notice.

Hello @protonmail@mastodon.social , I would like to ask if there are any updates on the proton drive roadmap. Main interest:

» How is the desktop client in general?
Windows and Mac.

» About that: "early access version of the app to a limited number of beta testers before the end of 2022"
We are approaching end of 2023Q1. Is there a closed beta test for a windows client? If yes, can someone (for example myself) submit an application to get on the alpha/beta testing? I would be happy to provide feedback and reports issues and don't mind if my drive wipes out, as I want to use it, but I can't until I can access my files locally (like kbfs) where I can browse browse from applications.

» What are the plans for a linux desktop client?
I (and a lot of other linux users) would be more than happy with a simple cli tool that can sync than we can automate that with cron or something, or a service that can run as user (
systemctl --user ....).

Thank you very much :)

ProtonThe Proton Drive roadmap | ProtonWe want to share our short-term development roadmap for Proton Drive. We explain what you can expect and when.

Getting away from #BigTech companies in order to protect my own #privacy has been very difficult. Over the last year I have completed the process many have termed "deGoogling" your life on r/privacy.

It was definitely I massive challenge, first starting with my #email and #cloudstorage providers and slowly move over all of my apps to #opensource and #privacy respecting alternatives.

But one thing that I have noticed, is that these #opensource alternatives are often quite extensive when it comes to features which can make them overly complicated for people that just want their privacy back but keep it simple.

I just found this solution, made by a small team of developers. They released a suite of apps that are normally on your phone, but kept is simple for you.

All of the apps are #adfree and #simple

Phone and Laptop Seizures at Airports and Borders - Privacy Travel Guide

"Border agents have the upper hand, you can be detained and your devices seized. Key disclosure laws make it legal to force you to surrender your passwords and biometric access. Back up your devices, use encrypted cloud storage, wipe and factory reset your device, create new travel accounts, restore your devices when you reach a safe network."

This is just insane.

I just found out about the difficulties that #PrivacyTools is currently experiencing. It sounds like they may have to eventually shutdown their Mastodon instance (as well as PeerTube and Matrix), which is not great for their users. Unfortunately, they don't have a lot of options. Whether they're going to fire those back up under a new domain is still under discussion. I hope their users can migrate off to some other instance, and of course they're welcome here.
