“It is vital that in marking these events, we do so in a way that respects the backgrounds & cultures of everyone who share these neighborhoods,” Chief Constable Jon Boutcher said in a statement. “There is no place for hate or intimidation — only space for celebration that welcomes & celebrates not divides.”

Today in Labor History July 10, 1921: Bloody Sunday: Seventeen people died and 200 houses were destroyed during rioting and gun battles in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The violence erupted the day before the beginning of a truce that was supposed to end the Irish War of Independence. As the truce approached, police launched a raid against republicans. However, the Irish Republican Army (IRA) ambushed them, killing an officer. In retaliation, Protestant loyalists attacked Catholic enclaves in west Belfast. As a result, Protestants and Catholics paramilitaries battled each other in the streets. There were also gun battles between Republicans and the police. And police also fired indiscriminately at Catholic civilians. Belfast saw almost 500 people killed from 1920–22 in political and sectarian violence related to the Irish War of Independence.

The Irish War of Independence has been portrayed in the play “The Shadow of a Gunman,” by Seán O'Casey, the 1929 novel, “The Last September,” by Elizabeth Bowen, the 1931 short story, “Guests of the Nation,” by Frank O'Connor and the more recent novels: “Troubles,” by J. G. Farrell (1970), “The Old Jest,” (1979) by Jennifer Johnston, and “The Soldier's Song,” (2010) by Alan Monaghan.

Happy #Doorsday everyone! 🚪
Here is #Germany's most famous #door (the website even claims it may be the most famous door in the world, ha!): The "Theses #Doors" of the All Saints' #Church in #Wittenberg. It is said that Martin Luther posted his 95 theses on this door. These theses launched the #Protestant #Reformation in 1517, resulting in the birth of #Protestantism.

Of course this is not the original door from back then. It burned down in 1760 in the Seven Years' War, together with most of the church, and was replaced. These #bronze doors were installed on Luther's 375th birthday in 1858, with his theses inscribed in Latin. Today, the doors are only used for special occasions. And for photos of course. Lots and lots of photos ... 😋

"In the Church of Rome the Sacrifice of the Mass is the chief act of worship. For this the priesthood exists, for this the Church exists. If the body and blood of Christ are not really present on the altar, there is no true and proper sacrifice for the priest to make. It follows from this, that there is no true and proper priest, no true and proper altar. The Church, the ministry, the sacraments must be differently regarded the moment we deny a real, that is an actual, presence of the body and blood of Christ." The words of Anglican heretic John Hunt in 1870 as he attempts to discredit the #Catholic Church. Reading him and other like him, they felt that the #Protestant nature of Christianity was complete such that there would be no future novelty. Oh, if he could see the state of these religions today! One that doggedly defends ancient teachings on contraception while the other opens the doors to sodomites calling what they do "marriage."

There are many heroes from WWII, and whenever I come across a name I’ve never heard of, I always like to publicise it.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer - A pastor and devoted Lutheran Christian who opposed the Nazi regime and simply wanted peace. Unfortunately, this kind and heroic man paid the ultimate price for his beliefs…

Pastors and priests whose sermons were considered in any way critical of the Nazi regime were reported to the authorities by people sitting in church to listen, to spy, to report.

If you Americans think we are not there now in our own time and place, if we think this could only have happened in Germany in the 1930s, then we're not seeing what's going on in our country now — with Christians leading the charge.

Bonhoeffer stated, by the way, that in the time he spent at Union Seminary in New York, he found the Black church in the US alive, spiritually profound, biblically faithful — but he found the white Christian churches in the US the opposite. He took back to Germany the inspiration he received from the Black church in the US and that was one of his guiding lights as he spoke out against the Nazis.

Just as Bishop Mariann Budde is now being attacked for speaking out.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer was imprisoned and executed for speaking (and acting) against the German state as a Lutheran leader. In Austria, the lay Catholic Franz Jäggerstätter was imprisoned for refusing to enlist in the army because his conscience did not permit him to support the Nazis. Jäggerstätter was executed.

Protestant church leaders especially welcomed Hitler as a manly man anointed by God — they actually said and wrote this — who would purify the German nation and make it strong and manly again.

And what many Americans also choose not to know: when a very few courageous and faithful Christians chose to speak out, they were ruthlessly attacked by both the German state under Hitler and by their fellow German Christians.

Today in Labor History January 21, 1525: Conrad Grebel, Felix Manz and George Blaurock founded the Swiss Anabaptist movement by baptizing each other and breaking a thousand-year tradition of church-state union. The Anabaptists were considered Radical Reformers. They preached against hate, killing, violence, taking oaths, participating in use of force or any military actions and against participation in civil government. They also believed in separation of church and state. However, some Anabaptists went even further, like those in the Munster Commune, who called for the absolute equality of man in all matters, including the distribution of wealth. They called upon the poor of the region to join them in sharing all the wealth of the town. Many also believed in polygamy and free love. Not surprisingly, both the Roman Catholics and the nascent Lutherans persecuted them heavily. This history is wonderfully portrayed in the epic novel, “Q” by the Italian fiction collective, Luther Blissett.

@burnoutqueen @miiamustang @hannu_ikonen Democratic Socialism would ultimately fail due to corporate/government corruption not unlike what we’re about to witness.
The elephant in the room is religion someone needs to take on white hypocrites by literally calling out #Christianity in the primary they probably wouldn’t win but there’s nothing to lose. #Protestant churches are nothing but recruitment arms for the #Republican Party divide them up and conquer I’ll be happy to do it.
