Unfortunately, our #Mastodon server was down for several days due to a problem with the conversion of the #RAID array. We apologize to our users for this inconvenience. Services are now running as usual, and thanks to our #backups, no data was lost. However, I now have a few more gray hairs in my beard...

Talking with the folks in the local #vintage / #retrocomputing community, they clued me in that the #ThinkPad #RAID is a steaming pile of 💩 and not worth the trouble.

🤷 Oh well. Thanks for cluing me in

So I swapped out the two testing #NVMe drives I was using and reinstalled the original sticks - to have #windoz10 demanding for the #bitlocker recovery key. 🤦‍♂️

Well, time to wipe & install #windoz11 then.

Install went fine, only 4 rando #drivers to find for all #devices to be recognized and working.

Using my #CTT scripts to install the majority of applications, then to remove the #spyware #bloatware and other garbage #micro$oft added to #windows11

Then migrate my #data from my other ThinkPad. Welcome to my #sunday #funday

BTW - if anyone of you has a recommendation for a 19" mini rack server (shorter mounting depth) I'd love to hear about them.

I'd like to try #proxmox for the typical services #homeassistant #nextcloud #paperlessngx #adblocker #vpn etc

Ideally #ssd or #nvme in a #raid plus separate disks for storage (also raid). IOMMU

Doesn't have to be the newest version. A slightly older and used one is also fine.

#boost welcome - thanks a lot!

Wow, do I ever regret buying #OWC's #SoftRAID. It lost track of one drive forcing me to initialize and rebuild it. While rebuilding, it bitched about another drive that kept disconnecting. Once the rebuild finished, I swapped enclosures (different manufacturer) for the supposedly disconnecting drive. SoftRAID didn't know anything about the drive forcing me to reinitialize it and rebuild yet again … that takes days for an 8 TB drive. Worst #RAID software ever.

the #Pine64 #SOQuartz has a nice lil trick: a M.2 slot that i fit with a 6 port SATA controller thingy

basically, i get to add 6 harddrives to this, giving me the option to #RAID (basically, turn several disks into just one, with some built-in backups and protection)

i've ordered 6 2.5" harddrives from a laptop repair shop in Ireland on eBay that should arrive any day ✨ again, trying to reduce e-waste here :)

hey hey #Linux #FileSystem #ZFS #RAID #XFS entities! I'm looking for extremely opinionated discourses on alternatives to ZFS on Linux for slapping together a #JBOD ("Just a Bunch Of Disks", "Just a Buncha Old Disks", "Jesus! Buncha Old Disks!", etc) array.

I like ZFS
but the fact that it's not in tree in-kernel is an issue for me. What I need most is reliability and stability (specifically regarding parity) here; integrity is the need. Read/write don't have to be blazingly fast (not that I'm mad about it).

I also have one
#proxmox ZFS array where a raw disk image is stored for a #Qemu #VirtualMachine; in the VM, it's formatted to XFS. That "seems" fine in limited testing thus far (and seems fast?, so it does seem like the defaults got the striping correct) but I kind of hate how I have multiple levels of abstraction here.

I don't think there's been any change on the
#BTRFS front re: raid-like array stability (I like and use BTRFS for single disk filesystems but) although I would love for that to be different.

I'm open to
#LVM, etc, or whatever might help me stay in tree and up to date. Thank you! Boosts appreciated and welcome.
