The Saalburg is a Roman cohort fort located on the ridge of the Taunus, NW of Bad Homburg, Hesse, Germany. It is part of the Limes Germanicus with most reconstructions in Germany, since 2005 part of a UNESCO World Heritage site. Founded in AD 90, expanded in 135. #RomanFortThursday

London once had a Roman fort and its remains can be seen underground in a car park. It was built around AD 110 and the rebuilt fort could house 5,000 soldiers in 5 hectares. It is similar to the forts at the Hadrian's Wall, built at the same time. #RomanFortThursday

The Roman German Limes fort at Holzhausen in Rhineland-Palatinate is one of the best-preserved forts. It was erected in the mid-3rd century AD during the reign of Caracalla (r. AD 211-217) and used until the abandonment of the whole limes in AD 260. Photos: Carole Raddato #RomanFortThursday
