Changed my mind. I decided to install Sailfish on the Sony Xperia 10 III.

It was plain sailing. 😃

I guess, things only become difficult when things go wrong, and things went very smoothly.

In brief, I unlocked the bootloader, and downloaded Android 12 from Sony. I flashed that to the Xperia (11 wasn't available). I performed all the usual 'phone stuff, which worked. I then flashed the 'phone with Sailfish using fastboot.

The same things are still working.

good feedback! i think #furiphone has support for #android apps (#waydroid iirc?) and back in the day so did #jolla / #sailfish - i think you can get those on a #sony these days

also i've run android-x86 in vm and its alright but idk what those apps are gonna try. supposedly only finance apps are allowed by google to check for a rooted phone but ... who knows peabee.substack.com/p/everyone

The best way to check if your current network provider (carrier) supports your 'phone/OS is to check for provisioning.

1. open your dialler
2. type *#*#4636#*#*
3. check the config options are enabled for:
VoLTE provisioned
WiFi calling provisioned

Unfortunately, a further recommendation is to use the Sony flashing tool, Emma, to downgrade the Android version. Emma only runs on Windows. I don't have a Windows PC. So, I will either need to borrow a Windows PC, or try it with Virtualbox/Qemu.

I suspect borrowing a Windows PC might be the easiest route.

A new epic adventure is about to begin. My quest is to have a privacy-respecting, and functional, mobile 'phone that can also make calls using VoLTE and WiFi calling. My travelling companion will be Sailfish OS. I'm not expecting it to be an easy journey.

My first step was getting a compatible 'phone. Here it is, my Sony Xperia 10 III. The Xperia is currently running Android 13. I'm going to revert it back to Android 11, as per the recommendation in the Sailfish docs.

One of the things I ordered yesterday was a @jolla C2 phone.
It has 4G (No 5G), you have to pay €4.99 for updates after the first year, and it has no NFC

It's a pure Linux (#Sailfish) device from within the #EU. I loved my #Nokia N900 and N9 despite the small app ecosystem but the #Jolla has an Android VM to run many Android apps

Some of us need to prove how well this stuff works to be get mass adoption of alternative open technologies not subject to #enshittification

Updated #Sailfish to 5.0 on my #Xperia 10ii. Seems to work and now microG also. However the #Jeep app still doesn’t log in. It doesn’t crash anymore but then just states login error after giving credentials. The network is a bit iffy so will need to investigate further. Also #AuroraStore got an update but after hitting update it closes down on start.

Actual native things so far work, but I haven’t yet done broader testing. Still a nice environment.

Just going to say it, Sailfish OS needs to be on more devices. Personally, I wish it were available in Southeast Asia.

Even on a PinePhone, missing port functionality and meager hardware, it is evidently a very good OS. It is (mostly) open-source, stewarded by a company based in Europe, has a rather slick UI, and has comparable security with the major mobile OSes.

To continue on the theme of car use with phones, I’d really be tempted to move away from dependency on American phone platforms, in the current climate. In other words most likely @jolla #Sailfish.

But lack of #Carplay would be a massive drawback I might not easily be OK with (this is why we need open standards). But also lack of Jeep app, EV charging apps (until we get ubiquitous acceptance of payment cards).

@tuomas_h there are so many more interesting #Android phones out there than #iPhones right now. And at much better prices. The only downside is the software. I tried several times with it, but I just utterly cannot get along with Google. You get the feeling they never seem to properly care about design. Not in their culture (you can see it everywhere with them).

I love the #Sailfish design but sadly I feel a cultural shift needs to happen there too for commercialisation.
