Daniel MacPhee 🔬🧬🧫🇨🇦<p>This is a wonderful essay from Dr. David Sherwood in Developmental Biology. Highly recommend for trainees. </p><p>A career as a biologist-a lifelong morphogenetic process. <br><a href="https://mas.to/tags/Scicomm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Scicomm</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/Research" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Research</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/Science" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Science</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/ScienceCareers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ScienceCareers</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/Curiosity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Curiosity</span></a><br><a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0012160625000582" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">sciencedirect.com/science/arti</span><span class="invisible">cle/pii/S0012160625000582</span></a></p>
J. 🧬🦠🥚🦎<p>Half of all scientists stop publishing after 10 years, with women more likely to leave than men, especially for biologists: <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-024-03222-7" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">nature.com/articles/d41586-024</span><span class="invisible">-03222-7</span></a> <a href="https://ecoevo.social/tags/nature" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>nature</span></a> <a href="https://ecoevo.social/tags/science" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>science</span></a> <a href="https://ecoevo.social/tags/sciencecareers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sciencecareers</span></a> <a href="https://ecoevo.social/tags/sexism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sexism</span></a></p>
Matt Hodgkinson<p>A study of "beauty bias" in scientific careers presented at <a href="https://scicomm.xyz/tags/ICSSI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ICSSI</span></a> made me uneasy. Scraping faces from Google Scholar, business school websites, and job applicants and using machine learning to rate attractiveness without their consent seems disrespectful, esp. as the names of the "beautiful" institutions (which correlates with school ranking) are released. A small business school might not appreciate being labelled as ugly! 🧵<br><a href="https://scicomm.xyz/tags/ScienceofScience" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ScienceofScience</span></a> <a href="https://scicomm.xyz/tags/Attractiveness" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Attractiveness</span></a> <a href="https://scicomm.xyz/tags/CareerProgression" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CareerProgression</span></a> <a href="https://scicomm.xyz/tags/ScienceCareers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ScienceCareers</span></a></p>

Quirk of remote collaborations & the lack of stability in academic jobs:

Me: I'm submitting the manuscript today, last chance to tweak - all good?
X: Sure, but could you update my affiliation to X?
Me: Eh?
X: Yeah, sorry - didn't I tell you? Been there X months already.

Sadly this must happen a lot given the short term nature of most academic posts #PermaDoc #PostDoc #ScienceCareers
