Ratings agency S&P Global said Tuesday that SoftBank’s “financial condition will likely deteriorate” as aresult of the OpenAl investment and that its plans to add debt could lead the agency to consider downgrading SoftBank’s ratings.

None of the startups with early leads in generative Al have shown they can operate profitably, and the sector is pouring tens of billions of dollars into data centers based on assumptions, not yet proven, of a future in which Al rapidly permeates the globe.

Early tech leaders often falter—a point SoftBank learned when it made a dot-com era bet that Yahoo would be the dominant force in search.

Market analysts have expressed concern over the Japanese company's heavy reliance on debt financing to pay for these major Al investments.

On Tuesday, the Japan Credit Rating Agency (JCR) revised the company's rating outlook from "stable" to "negative," observing that investment in generative Al is associated with a degree of uncertainty. The agency has noted that as SoftBank's holdings in unlisted Al- related assets continue to grow, the risk of fluctuations in the equity value increases.

"JCR believes that the quality of assets will decline somewhat due to the increase in investments in unlisted Al-related companies," the agency said.

It added that the company's loan-to-value ratio is expected to rise to the 20% range from 12.9% at the end of 2024, due to the new Al investments that SoftBank has announced since January, This is close to the 25% limit that SoftBank's financial policy says it cannot borrow.
