#ThreeGoodThings #3GoodThings

1. I've been rereading the #StormlightArchive by #BrandonSanderson to prepare for the newest one, Wind and Truth (no spoilers please) and I love how I pick something new out of it each time. Looking forward to the new book, but I'm enjoying this part too (journey before destination!). There are many parallels to yoga as well, when I'm feeling better I'd like to explore that more in a post.

2. I'm still trying to recuperate after being ill again, but I'm making some slow but steady progress and have been feeling a tad more rested than last week.

3. The weather has been sunny these last few days, I spent more time outside, with more and more birds, flowers, bees and butterflies visiting. Spring has really started again.

New account, so new #introduction. Let's do it again!

I have a
#MastersDegree in #ComputerScience and #ComputerEngineering. I went to #NMU for undergrad and #MSU for my graduate degree. I currently work at #UChicago for the #TMWCenter, which focuses on helping young children acquire language (and therefore other learning skills) faster.

In my spare time, I develop
#OpenSourceSoftware such as
- a
#SphinxDoc extension that embed #Fediverse comments on your page
- a library to talk to
#ManifoldMarkets from native #Python
- a
#PredictionMarket manager using the above
- a
#transpiler from a subset of Python to #OpenStreetMaps's #OverpassQL
- bug fixes to many other projects, including
#mypy, #base58, #attrs, #CPython, & more

I spend a fair bit of my time these days on
#MathResearch, specifically into the #ThueMorse Sequence and its extensions.

I'm also a hobbyist editor on OpenStreetMap.

#Demisexual, #transfem, and happily engaged to my #enby sweetheart.

We have two cats:
#OpheTheLoaf and #MayalaranTheCat (yes, from #StormlightArchive) See here for more on them!

I speak English fluently, Spanish haltingly, and am trying to learn Chinese

TransFem SpaceOlivia A-C (@LivInTheLookingGlass)These are our cats, #OpheTheLoaf and #MayalaranTheCat. Ophelia was originally my partner's, we live together full time now, and are an integrated family Fun facts about Ophelia: * She is missing a tooth, so her lip sometimes gets stuck open in a cute way * She has an "activation noise" that sounds kinda like a pigeon * She will often do 10/10 loafs, hence the nickname Some facts about Maya: * Her favorite hobby is judging the neighbors * She is very anxious * She has an incredibly dainty play style * She has a series of increasingly ridiculous nicknames: Mayalaran -> Maya -> Mayo -> Aioli -> Au Jus (Follow the hashtags if you want just my cats) #CatsOfMastodon #CatsOfFedi (📎8)

Just finished reading “The Way of Kings” by Brandon Sanderson. At first, I was a bit thrown off by all the odd fantasy names and concepts, but once I got over that, the story absolutely pulled me in and made the book hard to put down.

Very impressive, I’m curios if the other books in the series can do this first instalment justice. Long series unfortunately have a tendency to drag.

9/10, can recommend.

Stormlight Archiven viides osa luettu. Olipahan eepos. Eeppinen, intensiivinen, humaani, koskettava.

#WindAndTruth was one of my favorite books in the #StormlightArchive and a fantastic climax to arc 1. It delivered on story promises, but twisted things in unexpected ways. The character arcs were satisfying and felt earned. The lore reveals were copious and helped answer the biggest questions of arc 1, while raising more. Ending arc 1 of such an ambitious series was a tall order and this book didn't disappoint. There were a few things that didn't work for me but overall this book was a triumph.

Oh dang, my #introduction post is waaay out of date now. Let's do it again!

I purchased Sanderson's new Stormlight Archive audiobook ages ago. It's now available and I finally downloaded all six parts last night.

It's 62 hours long.

I'm just... <sigh>

I think maybe I'm not the target demographic for this series anymore. I dearly love Kate Reading and Michael Kramer's narrative performance work, but dayam...

The series is sprawling and massive, linking to almost every series and novella Sanderson has ever written.

And I'm like... My life doesn't really have room for this anymore. His work isn't something I can easily set down and pick up or just listen to in the background... I've literally forgotten huge swaths of the storyline thus far, and given that he's now pulling in characters and plot points from his other series, I'm just...

I love his writing. I do love his books. I really *really* enjoy them. But I fear I've passed the point of my capacity to stay engaged. He's now writing to his walled garden and I just don't have the luxury of time (nor the will?) to enjoy being in it.

It's clear he's a great world-builder. But I fear he's lost me on this one.

Maybe someday, but this rabbit hole goes far far deeper than I have time to fall down into.

Man the first book in the Stormlight series drops vocabulary hard, right out the gate. Tons of references to places, powers, titles, etc….It attempts to provide a definition early on but since everything seems to have like prefixes/suffixes it's hard to keep it all straight. I'm definitely reading slower that I normally would just trying to keep definitions straight.

But book 1 does have adventure and drama early on. And thank goodness cause I might have nope'd out by now.
