Happy #Swamptember! Day 10

"A seminal study was conducted in 1997...to put an economic value on all the benefits we derive from ecosystems throughout the world...These benefits include everything from natural goods (e.g. food, water, and timber) to services like climate regulation and pollution reduction. Wetlands accounted for at least $4.9 trillion ($9.6T today)...and were [second] in terms of value on a per acre basis."

Happy #Swamptember! Day 6

Did you know some swamps can appear & disappear each year? The Okavango Delta in Botswana becomes a swamp each rainy season when flood waters innundate & saturate the region. The trees here have adapted to survive periods of flood & drought.

This Delta is a UNESCO World Heritage site, as one of the few interior delta systems that do not flow into a sea or ocean, instead all the water evaporates!

Happy #Swamptember! Day 5

The Okefenokee Swamp, located in southern Georgia and northern Florida, USA, is the largest blackwater wetland ecosystem in North America, covering 640 sq miles.

The swamp is forested by Bald Cypress & Swamp Tupelo trees with upland areas supporting thick stands of evergreen Oaks.

The swamp is home to many species of carnivorous plants, wading birds, woodpeckers, songbirds, reptiles, & frogs.

Happy #Swamptember! Day 4

Swamps, in mythology and culture, are usually depicted as dangerous, evil, and scary. Why are these ecosystems, which provide so many beneficial ecological services, reviled?

"Even the language of the wetlands is used to evoke a negative response. Feelings of being 'mired' or 'bogged down', of being 'swamped with work', or removing corruption by 'draining the swamp'.”

Happy #Swamptember! Day 3

"Swamps are dominated by trees. They are often named for the type of trees that grow in them, such as cypress swamps or hardwood swamps. Freshwater swamps are commonly found inland, while saltwater swamps are usually found along coastal areas. Swamps are transition areas. They are neither totally land nor totally water."

HAPPY #SWAMPTEMBER!

#Wetlands are the most unappreciated & reviled of ecosystems. But wetlands are amazing sponges which soak up #stormwater to prevent flooding, are home to rare #plants, & are the largest #carbon sinks of any ecosystem, acre for acre.

Celebrate the #beauty of swamps, their #ecological value, & their #economic benefits all month long - & get ready to celebrate #Bogtober, #Fenuary, & #MarshMadness.
