AJ Sadauskas
A really insightful big-picture response to some of the post-election media commentary about The Greens by former senator and party cofounder Janet Rice: https://greenagenda.org.au/2025/05/the-times-are-urgent/?utm_source=Mastodon #auspol #TheGreens

"I’ve been musing on what our offer is to the broad range of people we are seeking to embrace in our movement. The tension that is perceived to exist between a focus on our work to achieve structural change that is likely to take some time and only be achieved when we have political power; and how much we focus on responding to people’s immediate material needs because of the inequality that is core to neoliberalism. So much of the commentary about us over the last week and indeed internal discussions about how much of a focus we have on the environment and climate compared with equality and justice can be boiled down to an assertion that we should only focus on one part of our agenda at the expense of the rest.

"So it’s worth being clear about what we are working for and what our movement is. We are offering more than a transactional reward of something of immediate personal value in return for their vote (though our agenda will materially benefit a lot of people who need those benefits and that will be what attracts them to vote for us).

"We are seeking to transform our society away from destructive neo-liberal capitalism into a society that is just, sustainable, caring, democratic and non violent. We know that this isn’t a small job but it’s worth working for and we will keep working for it. An essential part of this is going to be transforming our parliaments and other state institutions, which we aim to do through democratic change. Yes, currently politicians in general and parliament sucks. It has to change."

Rice echoes something I've heard a number of The Greens' members and volunteers say: That it's worth revisiting whether investing the bulk of the party's resources in a few winnable seats is the best way forward.

"I understand our strategy of narrow targeting of a few seats and resourcing them well. But I think the most searching question we have to ask ourselves post election is did we get the value we hoped for from this strategy? What should our criteria be in the future as to where resources get spent? Can we spend a small amount of financial resources to unleash a groundswell of volunteer commitment in particular areas?

"I think we need to recognise the fertile ground that we have beyond our targeted seats and facilitate a thousand flowers to bloom. Our work in these suburbs and regions will be based on relationships, of listening, of empathy and care. And being clear about what the Greens stand for and how us working together will benefit them. It may be that our work in these seats won’t result in electoral wins at the next election, and that we will be criticised for spreading rather than concentrating our vote. But it will yield longer term benefits to both the party and the communities we are working with."

AJ Sadauskas
Some important perspective from Victorian Greens Leader Ellen Sandell about the recent federal election result:

https://greenagenda.org.au/2025/05/were-not-done-yet/?utm_source=mastodon&utm_medium=social #auspol #vicpol #TheGreens

"The other lesson to be clear about is that lower house seats are incredibly hard to win for minor parties, even at the best of times. In places like Melbourne and Wills, we have to outpoll both major parties combined. That’s always been a huge ask. Remarkably, we’ve done it before, not just in Federal Melbourne but also in state seats like Melbourne, Richmond, Brunswick, and Newtown. But it’s no small task.

"In order to be successful, MPs need to build broad coalitions in their electorates to appeal to 50% of voters across different generations, cultures, and backgrounds. Labor MPs often do this by standing for as little as possible, and some commentators will now tell us that we need to do the same. But Adam [Bandt] showed us a different way. He built those coalitions without compromising our values.

"His team paired smart and genuine grassroots ground work with values-based work in Canberra and the media. Adam stood up for young people and renters, and for our poor and multicultural communities in public housing, while also building trust with older voters who care about the future, the environment and their local neighbourhood. It wasn’t either or.

"Political pundits right now are full of advice about how the Greens should change our ways to appeal to this broad coalition — that we should talk less about Gaza, renters, or coal. Curiously, these are often the same people who used to tell us to talk more about the economy and less about climate change!

"What they don’t understand is something fundamental to who we are as Greens: unlike the major parties we’re not here to win for winning’s sake."

AJ Sadauskas
Some thoughts at my end, having volunteered to hand out H2Vs for The Greens yesterday. (Please note these are just my own personal thoughts here.)

First, the good. The Greens' volunteer onboarding has gotten a *lot* better than it was 10 or 20 years ago.

Videos, in-person or online volunteer onboarding, and clear emails to volunteers.

The rostering, communication on the day, organisation, all a lot better than it was at previous elections.

There was a roster of people setting up and packing up each polling booth. There was a roster of people manning each polling booth. And there were volunteers reallocated to people that had longer queues.

Some of that was the volunteer organisers at the local branch and some would have been from head office, and I was impressed.

Also, in the lead-up to the election, The Greens held a campaign event at Parramatta town hall. It was well attended with a very diverse audience.

Senator Mehreen Faruqi was very well received by the audience.

Just looking at other people's faces in the crowd, there were times when Faruqi said the same thing as Adam Bandt, and it was better received by people from non-European backgrounds because it wasn't a white guy saying it.

So who says it, and who represents the party, matters as much as what is said.

Now, where I think there's room for improvement.

The Greens have historically been a very inner-city, and very white party, at least in both Melbourne and Sydney.

And it has tended to be a very Melbourne party.

It seems to be getting better at engaging with multicultural communities, but there's still work to do.

And while there are many committed volunteers across the suburbs, the party tends to focus most of its resources on the most immediately winnable inner-city lower house seats.

My suggestions for addressing that will be different for Melbourne vs Sydney.

In NSW, many of the senator/stare upper house MP's offices are in the inner suburbs. Could they be based in the Parramatta CBD?

Likewise, many party events are in suburbs like Redfern, Newtown, Glebe, or Surry Hills. Again, could some of those be held somewhere like Parra?

Melbourne is trickier, because unlike Western Sydney, the metro area doesn't just sprawl mostly in one direction with an identifiable secondary CBD.

But I think there does have to be an effort from head office to grow the party's grassroots branch in parts of Melbourne where it has historically been weak, such as around Knox anx Ringwood.

And, especially at state level, to focus a bit more on policies (such as improving Melbourne's bus network) that will have more impact in the suburbs than the inner city.

Finally, the media — especially the Murdoch media — will always be hostile to The Greens.

Getting the message out will depend almost 100% on the party building its own media channels and outlets.

#Auspol #TheGreens

I can’t see the new Labor member giving up a portion of their salary to fund school breakfasts and community events.

#TheGreens #Griffith #QldVotes

“We’ve built a movement that challenges the power of billionaires & big business, & demands a fairer future for all of us.

We’re fighting for a country that puts people before profit & makes housing, healthcare, & education a right, not a privilege.

We know what’s at stake.

Dutton’s Liberals will drag us backwards. Labor refuses to rise to the challenges we face.

It’s never been clearer: if you want change, you have to vote for it

#TheGreens will keep Dutton out & get Labor to act” #auspol
