@mordoc yeah...

Not shure if they too do #MAC / #PCI-ID allowlisting of #NIC|s like #ThinkPad|s do for "certification compliance" and oftentimes they have no convenient way to even shove one of those M.2 Ethernet Adaptors in.

  • There are some #ThinkStation Tiny boxes in the same exterior form factor with dedicaded GPUs (and bigger power bricks) but whilst those are half-height PCIe x16 slots, they have a proprietary external I/O plate, cost quite a lot more and due to the proprietary I/O plate won't fit like an i350-T4 or X520-T4 NIC...

Personally, I think it's sad that 10" lost out to 19" in terms of form factor, even tho @jwildeboer and espechally @geerlingguy do push for a resurgence of the form factor...

I've happily run various Linux distros for a number of years, but with little exposure to other Unix-like operating systems.

I want to explore different ways of doing things on a computer, and I'm curious about the BSD descendants. I've briefly looked at OpenBSD and NetBSD.

Now I'm trying FreeBSD with beginner's mind. :freebsd:

I'm using a Thinkpad T480s as my test rig, and will share my notes as I explore and figure things out.

Onward!

EDIT: a reboot fixed this??? Weird!

Anyone know whats going on with my mom's new Thinkpad T14? On a fresh #Fedora install, whenever I make broad strokes across the trackpad, it works fine... But whenever I move my finger little bits across the trackpad? It stops moving and doesnt move accurately. Its a super shitty experience. Anyone know if this is the terrible trackpad in the laptop or if its a Linux fault? #thinkpad #linux

As usual, Lenovo delayed my order, and the price just dropped today. One thing I really like about Apple is that they don't do things like that. Lenovo's pricing is like a stock — it changes every day, and they generally don't allow order cancellations for CTO (Configure-To-Order) models. #lenovo #thinkpad

@tarnkappeinfo interessanter Test und Rabatt und so :) kommt vom Gefühl her hin …

… ich guck ja auch immer noch gerne die Passmarks an:

cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=I

sicher ist die Grafikeinheit bei dem GoLite ein bisschen besser inzwischen, aber der rohe CPU-Leistung sieht nicht so viel besser aus als bei meinem klapprig-gerontigen #Thinkpad L412:

cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=I

… und das is schon echt eine Schnecke.

So still on my #OpenBSD adventure and although I missed images in the terminal be it sixel in xterm or the kitty protocol in kitty, I've decided to stick with good old #Xterm . Also on my #FreeBSD daily driver I'm used to such luxuries as icons in the terminal like font awesome or nerd fonts but even though I could have used alacritty or kitty to achieve this I have decided to for go them. After all what do they do other make it look pretty ? I don't get any other functionality from them and they can easily be replaced with text. You might have noticed too that although I'm a #Wayland chic on my #ThinkPad I've decided to be all nostalgic and stick with Xorg on OpenBSD. I haven't yet settled on a window manager be it tiling or stacking but #HerbstluftWM and #Openbox are in my sights although I'm still using the default #Fvwm right now. I have my Qutebrowser setup and aerc for my email. Printing via cups and xsane for scanning. Looking into nsxiv for an image viewer as the OpenBSD port of imv is well out of date. Yes I'm having to make small changes but once I'm finished this wee Dell Optiplex 3080 tower will be perfect for daily driving OpenBSD and I'm looking forward to learning lots more. #RunBSD

@felyashono You don't need to make devices #thicc|er or heavier just by making them #repairable.

  • #Sony's Vaio #P11Z did have a toolfree-removeable battery yet it was less than 15mm thick and weighted ~560g with the standard battery and even <750g with an obscenely thicc aftermarket battery.

  • #Fairphone's devices are just as #thinn as any other #smartphone, yet they offer toolfree replaceable batteries!

  • #rectangular / #prismatic cells exist. Just because you rarely see them compared to 14500/18650/21700 cylinders but that doesn't mean they ain't available.

  • if #Framework didn't decide to go with a *"pan"-style design, they could've made their flat #battery toolfree-swappable just as the Aforementioned VAIO.

There are other ways to make a device thinner and lighter, ranging from Magnesium to fiber reinforced plastic to carbon fiber. Some #ThinkPad|s did all 3.

  • Not to mention sticking batteries in makes replacements unnecessary dangerous and can yield users to not replace "#DangerPillow|s" until they crack the housong or most likely the screen.

Also most of the gains in terms of battery runtime are attributeabke to better battery chemistry, higher grade cells by modern standards and lower power consumption by smaller process nodes (65nm @ 1,5V -> 7nm @ 0,85V can basically reduce power by 90% without any tricks!) and more powerful chips that more dynamically switch to low power states transparently. (Which is why you often get 4 different TDP ratings on some chips, with nominal, maximum & minimum configureable maximums and typical @ nominal settings)…

#AntiRepairDesign is a choice by the manufacturer. #IP68, #ATEX & #MILSTD810 can be achieved without glueing shit together!
