New research from the Department for #Transport (DfT) shows that leisure travel is now the most common reason people travel by #train. It also highlights midweek commuting, with Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays being the busiest days. The #railway is vital for connecting people for work, education, healthcare, and leisure, supporting economic growth.

The report found 54% of passengers travel for leisure, 30% for work or education, and 15% for business. The government is investing in a major overhaul of the rail network, moving towards public ownership and the creation of Great British Railways (GBR).

Despite challenges like delays and cancellations, the government is working to improve service reliability and has introduced new performance measures at 1,700 stations. Rail revenue has seen growth, with over one million tickets sold during the latest rail sale, indicating strong demand for train travel.

@rhelune

In #Europe, I always travel by #train. In the past, that has involved e.g. two #nighttrains (with beds) per direction and a total travel time of ≈ 50 hours each way.

I vote "50 hours"!

However, I also travelled to America and Asia. To America there is no train. To Asia it's very complicated and expensive. Travelling by container ship is even more expensive and takes weeks. To both destinations, I took the plane 😞
