The University of #Alaska (UA) is going full Oprah!

UA just released its annual employee survey.

The gist: almost every thing is worse than last year. And shit is pretty bad indeed. E.g., at #UAS 80% say they are not paid fairly.

The University's response? No, they're not going out and getting the millions needed to raise everyone's pay back to 2018 levels (in real dollars).

Instead, they are pitting ~6,000 workers against each other for something like 40 awards worth $100-1000 dollars, and a few $5000 grand prizes.

It's like saying a solution to systemic poverty would be to have a folks scramble to get on Oprah's show to get a one-off token gift.

Chances are, you won't get an award. But even the biggest one it isn't going to make up for your lost purchasing power and underpayment relative to other Unis.

By the way, the University hides its employee survey results behind a login and then spins the results in the most obvious and absurd ways:

@AntiracistHippie "#NorthDakota’s strong ties with the #drone industry formed a few years ago, with the state’s goal of transforming the state into ground zero for drone technology. By taking advantage of the state, its resources, and its people, the mission to turn North Dakota into a silicon valley for drones has already produced a vast network of unmanned aircraft system (#UAS) technological hubs. However, in doing so it has also entangled North Dakotans into a deep relationship with #Elbit Systems of America, a subsidiary of the #Israeli company. This relationship is not comprehensively understood by #NorthDakotans nor our lawmakers."

Our Portable Aircraft Rucksack for Atmospheric Sensing and In-situ Turbulence Estimation (PARASITE) is a meteorological payload we developed for multicopters - here a #dji #Mavic3E. The system measures 🌡️ #temperature, 💦 #humidity and💨 3d #wind vector over 10 times a second (>10Hz).

We applied this system during the @DeutscherWetterdienst #HErZ #VITAL campaign¹ last summer @fzj and are currently improving and validating it further.

Small #UAS (uncrewed aircraft systems) such as #multicopters can bridge the observation gap of high-resolution in-situ measurements in the lower atmosphere (lowest few km).

We'll present more @EuroGeosciences #EGU25 this year.

2024DEC07 “Fact Sheet: DoD Strategy for countering unmanned systems”

“The rapid development and proliferation of unmanned systems is changing the character of conflict. To meet this challenge, the Department of Defense (DoD) has developed a #classified strategy to unify the Department’s approach to countering #adversary use of these systems that looks across domains, characteristics, missions, and timeframes.
The #strategy builds on other major #DoD initiatives, including the standup of the Joint Counter-Small #UAS Office, the establishment of a Warfighter Senior Integration Group to meet urgent operational needs, and the launch of the #Replicator2 initiative to #defend against the threats of small aerial systems at our most critical installations and force concentrations.”

A classified strategy 🧐
