Es ist nachts immer noch zu kalt! (5°C/41F). Meine Melonen wollen dringend raus!
People sleep on the #movie #Downsizing starring #MattDamon. A very scary #future where generations to come fail to eat their #vegetables and don't grow past a few inches.
Started seeds in a "snail coil" format 4/28. Got seedlings already. Very exciting! Future zucchini, yellow summer squash, heirloom tomatoes. Watching every coil for more. https://biketoworkbarb.blogspot.com/2025/05/seed-snail-speriment-episode-2.html

Moved the tomatoes out of the greenhouse today.
I'll eventually need to build a chicken wire cage around them to keep out the bluejays, a lesson I learned sorely last year.
The peas are ready and tasty!

#May is the month to sow your Mangel Wurtzels. I just have. Have you? #Autumn monsters to come. This variety is the classic Long Red Mammoth beloved of #NineteenthCentury #Sewage farmers. #Gardening #Roots #Vegetables
I'm currently using my little car as a very effective greenhouse.. courgettes and pumpkins coming up already and only been in there for 5 days! Just added some squash and sunflowers. #Gardening #Permaculture #GrowYourOwn #vegetables #Allotment
I haven't solved my cucumber treillis situation. I'll have to do it like other Chinese people do: with sticks and strings #planting #vegetables #cucumber #plants
Today's Flighty's plot blog post is It's early May
Anybody out there know what's up with this funny little tomato I found in my yard? #gardening #vegetables

Planting the garden has slowed to a crawl given the rainy, cool weather over the last few days. This morning the temperature was a chilly 39° F (4° C).
But in 2 or 3 weeks, it will be go time for tomatoes and sweet potatoes, so I’m getting things ready.
The allotment is looking good considering how hot and dry it has been; broad beans (Bartek) and the tall-growing peas (Alderman) are taking off nicely. (See alt text). The ridged ground is where the second early potatoes are planted but they are not through yet. They are Wilja, Nadine and Acoustic.
The onions and garlic are also on schedule (out of shot).
Heartfelt thanks to my wife, who is doing all the hard work this year due to my poor health.

UK Based Question: What loam based peat-free compost are people recommending these days. Not the cheap fluffy "potting compost" crap at B&Q that is full of wood and barely retains water!
Something soil/loam based.
Few of the usual retailers spec the stuff properly!
(I am being consulted on specifying the bits to buy to put some salad planters in at work.)
