A new bird for #Vienna for me - two Common Sandpipers! These were on the Alte Donau wasserpark, a town park that's also part of Vienna's complex flood defence systems and which hosts a large heronry.

The sandpipers are smallish wading birds: they're unlikely to hang around or nest in Vienna itself but might try to find a stream in some hills or mountains nearby to live beside. I hope they have a good year.

Cutting boards are the ultimate wedding gift. I got married plenty of years ago, and the one gift item that I use every day is the beautiful and high quality cutting board someone gave us. It sits right there on the kitchen counter and it handles everything we throw at it with grace. Like us, it now looks a little used but it's still in pretty good shape.

I've come by a woodworking shop on a Ostermarkt Am Hof in Vienna the other day where the owner apparently specialized in cutting boards - they are beautiful. Not cheap, mind you, but who wants a cheap wedding gift?!
