Yes and no.

#Apple's #iPad makes it easy to test, build and sell #CCSS [commercial closed-source software] at a premium.

  • I mean, I'm happy with my #X230Tablet but I do acknowledge this is an old device and it's rather the exception than norm...

Simply because #Wacom makes good passive stylus and pen-capable touchscreens.

  • So OFC companies that have the money and resources to build premium #apps will target the premium customers who by virtue ob being able to splash 4 digits on a tablet brand-new will be proven more able to pay for their software.

That's why #Autodesk won't even sell people a #Linux license for #Maya (or any of their other tools) unless one has proof of ownership of a certified workstation (i.e. HP Z-series) with a #RHEL [#RedHat] #Workstation #subscription active to begin with.

  • And yes they will run the machine's serial # to check if it's ordered with parts that fit their system requirements from the factory and will demand the same for RHEL. I've been there and had to do that before they even consider offering one a subscription!

Compare that to like #AffinityDesigner on #iOS (or rather "#iPadOS") and the fact that basically all iPad users are expected to have an Apple account and credit card linked to it for the #AppStore and it's no wounder the developers of creative apps will focus on that.

The only exception are #FLOSS #apps that are native to Linux and/or got started on other #Unix Systems [#blender started out on #IRIX as CCSS] and serve #macOS & #Windows as 2nd & 3rd tier platforms [i.e. #darktable oftentimes had no Windows builds because none of the devs had or wanted a Windows machine to test on!]

@simonzerafa I mean obviously #reuse / #UseLonger is better and if your options are "corporate surplus" or nothing then I'd never judge.

To me it's just that #ThinkPad as a brand has really died as every single Device is a #downgrade in #repairability & #upgradeability compared to my #X230Tablet:

Personally, I wish I had €.€€€.€€€ so I could just develop the #NUCbook and be done with the #Enshittification of #Laptops / #Notebooks!

I know nothing about #hdr, but thanks to #gnome48 I now have the ability to enable it for both my #workstation display (ASUS VP32UQ) and my #laptop (ThinkPad Z16 AMD).
I don't play games and use my computers for #music production, #graphic design, #video editing and so on.
So far I've noticed that with HDR turned on, everything looks a little more lifeless and brighter, maybe less contrasty. Is this the idea and does HDR make sense for my use case?

@lonseidman I did consider a #ThinkstationTiny ages ago and for their size they pack a lot of power, tho for an entry-level #compact #workstation they also cost a lot and whilst very maintainable, they ain't as versatile and upgradeable.

What did surprise me on that loaner unit you got sent in for #testing is that they kneecapped themselves with a single DIMM and a single NVMe SSD, which really kills at least 30-60% performance each, making no sense when it has the biggest GPU + CPU combo.

  • At least unlike the previous generations (i.e. #P360 Tiny) they chose to make it a dual-fan setup instead of having the #GPU needing to dissipate it's heat with a headpipe and finstack in the exhaust of the #CPU fan, making the system louder and hotter than it could be in the build volume it has...

Also whoever at #YouTube decided to shove shitty #dubbing over it:

  • Tell them STOP IT! It's an insult to me as a German native speaker to have worse quality than some #Memes and #Syncros people did 20 years ago!

If you paid for that voiceover, you should demand your money back!

I ask the Linux community to support this cause: Proton has been offering native clients for Windows and macOS for their Proton Drive for years - but still none for Linux!

This company claims to be fighting against Big Tech and for privacy, and forgets about the ONLY platform that really guarantees data protection and privacy. And treats Linux very neglectfully. Surely that can't be possible? What about you, Proton? Is everything really consecrated to the mainstream and the god of sales?

The more Linux users in the Proton community get involved, the sooner a native application for Linux will hopefully be available. Please share and spread the word! Thank you, folks!

The Voice of the Proton CommunityLinux ClientProton Drive really needs the ability to sync desktop files automatically. This post focuses on a Linux client for Proton Drive.

As it's the 1st Sunday of the month and #mdadm's periodic checks runs, here's a short plug for all those who want the #SoftwareRAID state in their #LinuxDesktop monitored without installing a fully fledged #monitoring system like Icinga or Xymon:

I wrote a small helper for the #systemtray showing an icon with green, yellow or red state indicators and doing notifications in case of change.
