A strong #earthquake struck central #Myanmar on Friday, & people rushed out of buildings in panic in #Yangon & also in #Bangkok, the capital of neighbouring #Thailand, witnesses said.

The USGS said the quake was of 7.7 magnitude & at a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles). It was followed by a powerful aftershock.

The epicentre was about 17.2 km from the city of #Mandalay, which has a population of about 1.2 million, according to USGS.

The Shwedagon Pagoda of Yangon, Myanmar was originally built in 588 BC & was enhanced over time; renovated in 1372 CE;, raised in 1453 CE, & 1774 CE.

It is said to contain 4 sacred relics: the staff of Kakusandha Buddha, water filter of Koṇāgamana Buddha, robe of Kassapa Buddha & 8 strands of hair from Gotama Buddha.
