Musings on #accessability after doing some minor tech support for my 85 year old father.

Some of my same-age peers have told me that unlike our parents, _we_ will be able to keep up with the latest tech developments and their use, since we grew up with rapidly changing technology.

I was always sceptical of that. And in recent years, I've become even more sceptical, as important parts of our IT infrastructure - such as #Google searches - have become _less_ user friendly as the companies that maintain them try to squeeze more money out of them to the detriment of the users.

So yeah, it's not looking good for us as we approach retirement age. If you have kids, try to stay on good terms with them so that they can explain this stuff to you. If you don't, try to befriend some younger people who will put up with your tech questions.

Aaagh! Theoretically, I have created an account on @MakerTube, but the logon I THOUGHT I had created isn't working, and the password recovery keeps TELLING me it has sent me an emailed password change link, but nothing gets through to my GMail (though the initial new account emails arrived just fine). I'm at a loss as to what to do next. Setting up accounts is hell when you're dyslexic (more on that next post).

We had a great slow birding event with a local community group today. #Birds were limited but we used basking turtles to help learn how to use binoculars, watched dragonflies and saw a few nice birds (Turkey Vultures, Mute Swans,
Great Egets, American Crows and 1 Bald Eagle)
I was delighted to be able to share the Birds Canada HQ accessible trail with this wonderful group.

One of the things I've noticed being on really crap internet most of the time this month is that the images won't load, but the alt text will. No alt text? Post might as well be a meaningless smudge.

I run Fedora Linux with XFCE desktop and I'm trying to get speakup #screenreader operational. The modules are all compiled in the kernel but from there I'm lost. Accessability wants Orca to run but I hate gnome.

Surely there is a simple document showing me but I have been googling all day. Rather DDG

A #CradleCatholic. A #LapsedCatholic? As a wee lad, I did all the stuff - Baptism, First Communion, Confirmation. I was born here all my life. When I was around four years old, the church kicked out my mom and, by extension, my family. An #ExcludedCatholic? I explored other practices and faiths, #meditation, #yoga, #Buddhism, and all the things. I wanted to not convert to a religion or practice that I had not been born to or wasn't otherwise ancestrally connected. I explored Protestant fellowships but soon began seeking "the deeper things" back in the lives of saints. This led to a deep dive into the #EarlyChurch Fathers and early #ChurchHistory. Entering the #OrthodoxChurch, I lived in several monasteries and wandered around the US like the guy in Way of a Pilgrim. I was ultimately drawn to #Theosis and the #PrayerOfTheHeart, sometimes called the #JesusPrayer. That church became tedious as well. Long story short, decades later, a pandemic, and a few ends of the world here I am. I recently stumbled across a podcast called the #PopeFrancisGeneration. I'm intrigued. I am listening. Let's see where my current studies lead.

Hey, collective intelligence, help me with a keyboard problem. Want to buy a Windows keyboard with the following:
Split ergonomic layout
Mechanical keys
TRUE backlit keys (all symbols lit up, not just outlined keys)
RGB nice, but not high up the list
Doesn't cost as much as a new PC.

This seems to be like finding a unicorn or bigfoot. Anybody got and suggestions or warnings? Please share.
