When needed, the deciduous tree pulls energy from its roots and up to the bare buds curled up tightly against a harsh environment...and the small leaves inside draw strength and burst through the bud scale barriers.

They start small, but grow larger and larger, producing energy that feeds the tree they belong to, and recharges the roots against future harsh events.

Photo through a 10x loupe of an almond vegetative bud bursting and leafing out. The brown bud scales have lengthened, providing a "barrel" for the leaves to quickly put on growth where they lengthen and widen while still held closely together and upright. The leaves of this one are now large enough that a couple centimeters show and are starting to flop out from the cylinder. They're also more green now and already photosynthesizing.

I haven't yet figured out a great way to do scale for bud dissections.

I have calibrated the microscope camera software, but that only works for flat slides. These are 3-dimensional items where the camera foreshortens. 1 mm measured on the dissection stage is not the same as a couple inches up on the modeling clay I use to hold things.

Emerging almond leaf cluster bursting out of a formerly dormant bud. It is on top of a plastic rule where each line is 1 mm. The camera stage isn't big enough to fit the entire leaf cluster, which goes off frame. However, the bit we can see is about 1 cm long.
