I can’t let ground-nesting bee season pass without sharing a photo. These little sweeties, presumably Andrena barbara, are flying all around my yard like a cloud of tiny pollen fairies. They are busily provisioning hundreds of underground tunnels with balls of pollen for their young to eat over the rest of the year.

Next spring, when the temperature hits about 55 degrees F and the Red Maple blooms, the next generation will emerge and start all over again. #bees #andrena

Andrena niveata, a micro-mining bee. With two beautiful white bands on its face.

Turns out I unwittingly reported, one year ago almost to the day, the only observation in the UK, and one of the 4 observations in the whole of Europe, the other 3 being in Belarus. Thanks to the anonymous iNaturalist identifier for the ID – I had only narrowed it down to subgenus Microandrena.

I was too late for some decent birding from the garden today as it was a busy Saturday. But i did see a few bees on big sunlit leaves and tried to get a picture of one of them. Without an "insect-lens" it is hard to do, but I liked this one nevertheless.
Unfortunately it probably can't be identified more precise than "mining bee" (Andrena), but that will do fine then.
