Listening to Dragonlance Chronicles: Dragons of Autumn Twilight by Weis and Hickman. I'm 11 hours in (of 20 hours), but I don't like any of the main characters, and I downright hate some of them (Raystlin or however his name is spelled chief among them)

Only Boopoo is a good character. But she's a side character who will be left by the wayside by the main cast, if she survives the dragon encounter that's about to start.

I've finished: The Narrow Road Between Desires by Patrick Rothfuss

I hardly remember anything about the plot and characters of The Name of the Wind. But I remember it being fun to read.

The Narrow Road Between Desires follows Bast, a character I don't recall and it's a tun of fun to read.

I guess I'm missing some context, but this is great even as a standalone.

The tone of good heated mischief, that prevails even through the serious bits makes this a wonderful cozy read.

the library finally delivered the audiobook of THE EYE OF THE WORLD (book one of THE WHEEL OF TIME series), so HERE WE GOOOOO

Rosamund Pike (who is FANTASTIC as Moiraine in the TV series) is narrating a new set of audiobooks, but my library only has the old ones, narrated by Kate Reading and Michael Kramer ... it's v nostalgic of the time my glasses broke and while waiting for the new ones to be made, I repaired them badly and then couldn't wear my glasses unless it was absolutely necessary, so I got Books On Disc from the library and listened to the Wheel of Time books 😅

Listened to Everything is Tuberculosis by John Green and it was a powerful experience. It's a sad, horrific, true story of health inequality, told with humanity and grace, much like his fiction. I understand now why this became his cause, and there's hope in the fact that so much has and still can be done to help. (Though as an American, it's hard not to fear we've taken such a wrong turn, we soon won't even be able to help ourselves.)

Personally, I'm a huge fan of #audiobooks and have read them almost exclusively for at least 15 years. It was a big transition to focus on listening instead of reading by eye. Making the switch has saved me from carrying around the weight of print books wherever I go, and it's made it possible for me to complete chores, sewing, and roadtrips while I read an amazing selection of books that take moments to download to my portable device.

Other audiobook readers, this happened to me on 3 different apps now so I wanted to alert others of this. As I usually do, I look up what new books my favorite narrators have narrated. Now, when I click on the narrator name, I am treated with audiobooks with their AI clone instead of their human narration. I already checked. That narrator is alive and still is recording audiobooks. Always listen to audiobooks before you make a purchase/borrow. Even now, it is incredibly obvious which ones are AI and which are narrated by the original human. This has happened to me on Hoopla, Libby, and on Audible so far. I know the audiobook narrator I looked up works for Recorded Books. It would not surprise me if they claim that they will never produce AI narrated audiobooks and then turn around and exploit their narrators without them knowing about it.

I took the liberty of emailing the narrator about this. This was his reply.

Robert,

Thank you very much for alerting me about the clone of my voice. As a Black narrator, this deeply troubles me, especially since I did not make this clone nor did I authorize it's creation. I will be extra vigilant as to what publishers I work with in the future and will make my displeasure very clear. I cannot thank you enough for your advocacy and for alerting me. In a hostile world that's more than willing to embrace this technology, we desperately need more people such as yourself.

Thank you again, my new friend!

Eew. This is a great example of why I ditched Audible years ago and now get audiobooks from Chirp.

Even Audiobooks Aren't Safe From AI Slop
... And as an added incentive, it's offering better royalty rates to authors who use Audible's AI to create an audiobook exclusively for the platform, Bloomberg reported.

Futurism · Even Audiobooks Aren't Safe From AI SlopBy Frank Landymore

Listening to Wheel of Time again from the beginning (I have yet to make it to the last few books), I am reminded of how good a story it truly is. I still prefer it to the TV adaptation. Yes it’s long but it has so much more depth. Until it gets a bit repetitive and slow in the later books.

Have you listened to the audiobooks? More than one version? Which version have you heard, or if you have listened to both, which do you recommend?

I've finished: The Book Eaters by Sunyi Dean

A different and refreshing take on the vampire trope. Exploring a society of information eaters.

But this is first and foremost the story of a young mother's rebellion against the patriarchy. A long emotional journey with no easy choices.

On one hand it is a very extreme novel, with evil and cruelty that would in many cases seem cartoonish. However Sunyi Dean manages to build a world where the characters motivations are clear and their actions are a understood as logical within their own frame of reference.

#Libraries are cutting back on staff and services after Trump's order to dismantle small agency: Institute of Museum and Library Services.
Libraries are also cutting programs that offer #ebooks, #audiobooks and other loan programs. These exploded in popularity, with over 660M people globally borrowing them in 2023 — a 19% annual increase.
#AttorneysGeneral in 21 states and American Library Association filed lawsuits against Trump admin for seeking to dismantle agency.
