Roxanne De Beaux, CEO of Camcycle (the Cambridge Cycling Campaign), was recently in Sydney to share her insights on effective cycling advocacy. The talk was facilitated by Bicycle NSW and Better Streets.

Here's a video of her preso: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=8ryL96Js0y0 #cycling #auspol #urbanism

Key lessons include controlling tge narrative by using the media effectively:

"Camcycle’s communications are a masterclass in narrative. They deliberately move beyond “cycling advocacy” and tell stories about health, safety, equity, and everyday journeys. Their media strategy includes:

* Monthly columns in the local paper

* Personal stories from “interested but concerned” groups

* Messaging that’s not about cyclists—it’s about communities

"Roxy was especially clear: if you're only talking to current advocates, you're missing your growth audience. Instead, speak to unusual suspects—like culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) women in Western Sydney—and make space for their “why” when it comes to walking and cycling."

Another is to find and leverage moments to tap into:

"Camcycle’s success is built around smart timing. Rather than trying to create momentum from scratch, they scan for windows of opportunity—government consultations, community events, or public sentiment—and jump in with prepared materials, stories, and allies. Roxy called these “leverage moments” where a small input can have a big impact.

"Camcycle doesn’t waste energy shouting into the void—they wait for the right moment to push. That might be a local council consultation, a new development (like Cambridge’s Waterbeach new town), or national spotlight events—like the Brisbane Olympics, which Roxy called an “all or nothing” moment for infrastructure opportunity. The key is to be ready with stories, alliances, and facts when those doors open. Also, are we ready for the Brisbane Olympics, what did we learn from the 2000 Sydney games, and how do we make cycling the centerpiece?"

Whitewashing, greenwashing, pinkwashing, and now we're seeing #cyberwashing.

We're increasingly seeing corporations make bold, exaggerated and misleading claims around security and privacy.

Monash University has released a report saying a properly functioning legislative framework is the fix. Tranche II of the #Privacy Act reform package will help fix this issue.

Contact your MP and Senators and demand delivery of these much needed reforms.

I keep seeing tiktoks talking about the issues people travelli to the US are having, and in the comments there are Australians who respond with some form of "Australia is now saying not to travel to the USA because it isn't safe"

..except that Australia isn't saying any such thing, and the US is still listed as green with the advisory "Exercise normal safety precautions".

So I've started asking these people commenting where they found that information, and they're all talking about news stories they've seen and heard in the media... so I asked more questions..

These people believe that the news media is run by the government.

I am not joking. I've had multiple people in the last week explaining to me that the news media is literally the government informing the population - not in a "we're reporting on this official statement given by the Australian government" way, but in a "this story is written by the government" way.

Media literacy is dead.

Another good reason to not be on X, and here instead.

"Almost one in five accounts analysed on X, formerly Twitter, discussing the election were fake and used AI-generated images and emotionally manipulative language, according to disinformation detection company Cyabra."
