The adult male barn swallow of the nominate subspecies H. r. rustica is 17–19 cm (6+1⁄2–7+1⁄2 in) long including 2–7 cm (1–3 in) of elongated outer tail feathers. It has a wingspan of 32–34.5 cm (12+1⁄2–13+1⁄2 in) and weighs 16–22 g (9⁄16–3⁄4 oz). It has steel blue upperparts and a rufous forehead, chin and throat, which are separated from the off-white underparts by a broad dark blue breast band. The outer tail feathers are elongated, giving the distinctive deeply forked "swallow tail". There is a line of white spots across the outer end of the upper tail The female is similar in appearance to the male, but the tail streamers are shorter, the blue of the upperparts and breast band is less glossy, and the underparts paler. The juvenile is browner and has a paler rufous face and whiter underparts. It also lacks the long tail streamers of the adult

I saw this buzzard on my walk with the dogs around the reservoirs this afternoon. I moved slightly to get a better angle, and he buggered off.

Dad-eyed junco: don’t see these often, and w hen I do they’re normally on the ground and very timid (will run under a bush or away as soon as they see me). This one jumped up into our small tree and watched me.

Just time for a quick look through photos from yesterday’s hike. Had to get out despite the cool winds to get my mind off the building Constitutional Crisis. Was looking for new arrivals of Northern Parula (have been reported) and Blue-grey Gnatcatcher. Was trying to work with a. Blue-grey when this Ruby-crowned Kinglet popped up and started singing and flaring its crest. Had a wonderful time whistling to it and having is sing back in response for about 5 minutes. Eased the day.

Heavy volunteer day today, and down one chainsaw with an oiler problem. The oilers on these battery models are tough to repair - basically take it completely apart, so we may have to use one of the gas models (ick) until we can do surgery (ick).

Small yellow bird with strong wing bars and a bright red crest. The short black bill, red crest and eye crescents give it away as a Ruby-crowned Kinglet. It sang to me from a distance of just over 2 meters for about 5 minutes - thrilling

The Common Redstart shows some affinity to the European Robin in many of its habits and actions. It has the same general carriage, and chat-like behaviour, and is the same length at 13–14.5 cm long but slightly slimmer and not quite as heavy, weighing 11–23 g. The orange-red tail, from which it and other redstarts get their names ("start" is an old word for "tail"), is frequently quivered. Among common European birds, only the Black Redstart (Phoenicurus ochrurus) has a similarly coloured tail

The male in summer has a slate-grey head and upperparts, except the rump and tail, which, like the flanks, underwing coverts and axillaries are orange-chestnut. The forehead is white; the sides of the face and throat are black. The two central tail feathers are dark brown, the other tail feathers bright orange-red. The wings are grey-brown in male P. p. phoenicurus but the remiges have white outer webs forming a pale to whitish wing-patch in adult male P. p. samamisicus (see Taxonomy and systematics). The orange on the flanks shades to almost white on the belly. The bill and legs are black

Good morning you lovely lot I am playing Upstairs Ninja again today and tomorrow thanks to Grant who is kindly getting up for the parrots again so I can rest a bit more. He has it down to a fine art now, with hardly much indignant screeching from Madame Ziggy at all this morning There is complete quiet downstairs now as breakfast is underway and soon they will all be snoozing. I will take my turn, and get some much needed Ziggy cuddles, on Thursday again. Luckily I still have cuddles in the afternoon after work.

Work was very full on yesterday and the next couple of days are looking very busy too. With my energy levels being quite low at the moment it's a wee bit of a struggle, but luckily I don't have anything physical to do. Thinking too hard can be quite tiring though so I try not to think much
