I feel like being told by #indigenous Elders it would be nice if they could bring back the #bison , but then deciding dire wolves are a better choice is totally missing the point of their self-stated mission. I’d don’t think we can really call dire wolves a keystone species. https://www.thefp.com/p/is-dire-wolf-real-colossal-deextinction #direwolf #genetics #geneediting
The Fluffy Cows were out! They were in a narrow transfer area waiting to be moved to another bit of prairie. Zeena and Tonttu of course were excited to say hi.
The sign on the fence says that everyone must stay 10 feet away from the fence for safety reasons, but doing so would have meant standing on the side of the slope! We broke the rules and stayed on the trail >>10' from the fence.
One winter, they kept elk together with the bison. I often wonder why they don't allow animals who cohabit well to share spaces, as it could mean much larger spaces for them and it seems more natural, but, anyway, I enjoyed this visit.

Bison runbbing rock a century after the bison were shot out by the colonists.
My next Canadian province is Manitoba with its provincial animal the bison and flower the crocus (Anemone patens) in this linocut. The block was inked 'à la poupée' (with different colours, pale violet, umber and brown, in different areas) and printed by hand on lovely Japanese kozo (or mulberry) paper.
It's no mystery how the bison could symbolize this prairie province. Manitoba is one of the few places where 1/n

Bison like those in Yellowstone once suffered a population crisis that conservationists call the "population bottleneck" of the 19th century. By the early 1900s, American bison numbers had been reduced by 99.9% across North America and only 23 wild bison were known to have survived poaching in Yellowstone.

Nation to Nation collaboration sees Yellowstone bison come to Canada for the 1st time
Fort Peck Indian Reservation in Montana, an original signatory of the Buffalo Treaty, a growing partnership of First Nations to return bison to Plains communities, gave Mosquito-Grizzly Bear's Head-Lean Man First Nation (MGBHLM) in Saskatchewan 11 plains bison from the Yellowstone National Park herd.

Western food was unhealthy and costly. So they turned back to bison and mushrooms
Grazing cows tend to concentrate together, sometimes feasting on a single type of plant until it’s depleted. Bison are more likely to cover more ground when they graze, eating a variety of plants, which has a gentler impact on the ecosystem.
