Do any of your characters participate in it?</strong></p><p>I don't know, yet. Everyone receives basic income that pays for housing, food, and necessities, and the government takes very good care of their health. While the current story deals with the fringe that don't want to be tracked by the government (e.g., criminals), and there is alcohol and inhalants, gambling? Today I revised this sentence to remove the word "bet" because of that uncertainty:</p><blockquote><p>You bet I did! </p></blockquote><p>It became:</p><blockquote><p>I surely did!</p></blockquote><p>[Author retains copyright (c)2025 R.S.]</p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/BoostingIsSharing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>BoostingIsSharing</span></a></p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/gender" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>gender</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/fiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>fiction</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writer</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/author" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>author</span></a><br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/Cozy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Cozy</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/mystery" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>mystery</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/sf" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>sf</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/sff" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>sff</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/sciencefiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>sciencefiction</span></a><br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writing</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writingcommunity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writingcommunity</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writersOfMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writersOfMastodon</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writers</span></a><br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/RSdiscussion" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RSdiscussion</span></a><br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/RSstory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RSstory</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/RSReluctanceStory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RSReluctanceStory</span></a></p>
RS, Author, Novelist, Prosaist<p><strong><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/ScribesAndMakers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ScribesAndMakers</span></a> 2025.09.22 — Do you feel you have a good eye for composing photos?</strong></p><p>Here's a tip. Unless you are using <em>film</em> (and if so, why?), capture multiple images of anything that catches your eye, framing from different angles to the sides or in front—taking the subject from a high vantage over your head and a low vantage at you knees <em>or</em> lying on the ground level, as well as eye level—at different zooms, even walking behind the subject or backlighting for the glare of the sun, or over and under exposing, trying different framings, even using too slow a shutter speed to blur action or fake it. Don't hesitate; if you see something, instantly shoot. Unprinted digital photos cost you nothing except time. Professionals will tell you 10 or 20 frames might not be sufficient. National Geographic photographers might have gotten 3 to 5 images published in a spread, but would have taken dozens and dozens and dozens of rolls of 36 frames to get those few publishable shots. Beyond that, even your iPhone takes higher resolution photos than typical film stock was able to, which means whatever digital device you wield today, you also have plenty of pixels to crop to find that good composition. Shoot in RAW if you can and buy bigger faster memory cards (but check what you camera can use) to support this. RAW gives you extra resolution versus compressed JPEG, and the digital negative can even be "developed" again when the technology improves to save the photos that were missing that <em>je ne sais quoi,</em> making you want to cry.</p><p>Personally, I think I have a good eye for composing through the lens, less so when I don't raise the camera, and I often but not always walk away with a good photo. Post-processing, easily available immediately if you use an iPhone, can save that iffy photo, or turn a wrong composition into a pleasant one at slightly lower resolution. You need surprising few pixels to print at 8x10. 24x36 requires more care.</p><p>This isn't to say you shouldn't carefully compose and expose, like Ansel Adams did, but do any of us have the patience to get it right in the camera?</p><p>[Author retains copyright (c)2025 R.S.]</p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/BoostingIsSharing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>BoostingIsSharing</span></a></p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/gender" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>gender</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/fiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>fiction</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writer</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/author" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>author</span></a><br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/photographer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>photographer</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/photography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>photography</span></a> chef cooking<br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writing</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writingcommunity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writingcommunity</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writersOfMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writersOfMastodon</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writers</span></a><br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/RSdiscussion" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RSdiscussion</span></a></p>
RS, Author, Novelist, Prosaist<p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/uspol" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>uspol</span></a> When ignorant (those who ignore) people make health policy, other (anti-women) agendas surface:</p><blockquote><p>Recommendations like these may not seem overtly sexist. But with the larger MAGA movement pushing traditional gender roles, there can be little doubt that women will be the ones expected to handle the new influx of responsibilities pushed on them by the MAHA [Make America Healthy Again] culture. It’s women who would be expected to give up pouring a child a bowl of cereal in favor of making bread from scratch [due to branding pasteurization bad for health]. It’s women who would be tasked with staying home with kids who have measles. And if those children were to die, women would be blamed for supposedly not feeding them enough homegrown organic foods.</p><p>The movement’s preoccupation with shaming women is evident in the fertility section of the MAHA strategy document. A call to “address the root causes of infertility” sounds innocuous enough. In reality, this phrase is MAHA code for shaming women who use birth control. As I reported last month, various MAHA groups have become fixated on the lie that the birth control pill is the cause of infertility. Means has made the podcast rounds, blaming birth control for infertility. Alex Clark, who was hired by Charlie Kirk to be Turning Point USA’s “wellness” influencer, has also argued that women suffering infertility brought it on themselves by previous birth control use.</p><p>It’s all a lie — but the strategy fits into the larger moralism that fuels the MAHA movement and is centered around this notion that modern life has made women “impure” and children’s health problems are a direct result. Having sex for pleasure is the main source of this alleged “impurity,” …</p></blockquote><p>The full Salon piece By AMANDA MARCOTTE is worth reading and boosting.</p><p><a href="https://www.salon.com/2025/09/22/rfk-jrs-war-on-vaccines-is-about-shaming-women-not-helping-kids/?utm_source=flipboard&amp;utm_content=user%2FSalon" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">salon.com/2025/09/22/rfk-jrs-w</span><span class="invisible">ar-on-vaccines-is-about-shaming-women-not-helping-kids/?utm_source=flipboard&amp;utm_content=user%2FSalon</span></a></p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/BoostingIsSharing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>BoostingIsSharing</span></a></p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/Feminist" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Feminist</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/sexist" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>sexist</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/Sexism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Sexism</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/Feminism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Feminism</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/Health" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Health</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/Medicine" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Medicine</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/vaccines" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>vaccines</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/vaccine" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>vaccine</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/Vaccination" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Vaccination</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/Maga" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Maga</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/Maha" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Maha</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/rfkjr" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>rfkjr</span></a></p>

Sometimes they change.</p><p>Bolt, in the current WiP, is discriminated against for her gender in a society where that's rare; her reaction is the primary causal event from which everything in the novel stems. The story takes place a dozen years later, depicting how she deals with new and old friends, all fighting discrimination, often in situations Bolt herself would not be discriminated against (for gender reasons). Her awareness of becoming more tolerant contrasted again her mindlessness when following gender roles—though tied up in the adventure and mystery combined with the twist in the story—ought leave the reader thinking deeply about such situations in their own lives.</p><p><em>PS: That was an analysis of the plot after the fact, not what I am thinking about while writing the story. Those things that are "disposable" are wood, glass, metal, and ceramic. Produce and beverages come in bulk and people bring things to carry it away, or it is tinned or in glass bottles. Water is kept in metal flasks. Everything is recycled. There are many open wild areas, half of them because a certain type of human protects these areas.
